They will also bang on about a lack of black managers on sky sports but never describe an athlete as black when trying to differentiate. I remember a comical one on sky with rugby league when the video ref was trying to see who's hand last touched the ball. One was black, one was white, and he said 'you can see the tape there on the wrist of (I forget who the black player was) and he appears to have touched it first'. Could have saved yourself a lot of hassle pal if you just mentioned the fact it was clearly black fingers that were touching the ball first! Not sure you will be accused of racism for that!
Life would be much simpler and probably better if we were all colour blind with respect to skin colour. Sunbed operators would probably disagree but **** them
Sorry to hear that sw3, must be a pain at times. Question though, how do you know your Ferrari's red?
I agree with this There really isn’t an issue with referring to someone’s colour if needed. It’s just all about context and intent. Loads of people in suits at a business conference and you suggested I spoke to the tall black bloke in the pink tie about something that’s no issue at all is it. It’s not racist to use a description, particularly of someone you don’t know, in the same way as it isn’t a bad thing to use a description they have said they’d prefer if you knew what that was. It’s all really simple if you’re a decent person
My wife once tried that & I fell for it ….nice new car but why have got a green Ferrari…. I had 10 seconds of panic before she started laughing!!
I don't disagree with the principle of what you say, however, there are people who will delight in taking offence even at what are innocent, factual comments. On that subject, and in no way shape or form defending them, but to me, there's a certain perverse irony in that the footballer punished for calling a player a 'black ****' was punished for the part of that is factually correct, and not for the offensive taboo slang, which nobody has disputed the recipient was. If instead he'd chosen another word to start, such as thick or lazy, it would not have been news, but is actually more derogatory for a professional sportsman.
never heard that before…decades ago there was a loose rule your first Ferrari had to be red. After that you are free to choose any colour you wish But for me, it has to be red with cream seats. I couldn’t consider any other combo
Strange I thought it was a thing, a bit like if it isn't red it isn't a Ducati. Looking for input fron Balkan and spes here...
I've heard of it but the other way round. If it's a ferrari it has to be red and if its a Ducati it has to be red. May be an Italian thing.
The problem with what you are saying though is that the 'black' part of the comment is the insult, eg being black should be something they are embarrassed of as it would be if they were called 'thick' or 'lazy'. You're right in what you are saying in that it was factually correct he is black but probably not to be used as a stick to beat him with, in the same way as lazy or thick. In fact calling someone thick or lazy would now probably land you in Court too! Black C*** Fat C*** Thick C*** Lazy C*** All gonna land you in trouble, but only one of them is something the victim cannot be blamed for. The other three they can do something about. And dont come back at me with Michael Jackson
There are, and they’re idiots There are also people who bang on about the discussion of suitable language as if it’s a big complicated deal, when it isn’t, and it hardly ever affects them anyway, because they delight in being offended by people suggesting that they try not to upset people…and they’re idiots too. On the footballers language, to be fair your suggestion is the actual reason. In that context the word **** tends to be prefixed with a derogatory term, like the ones you suggest (as opposed to ‘tall’ or ‘witty’ for example) which is why the perception is that the speaker is suggesting that being black is derogatory in its own right (as opposed to simply a descriptor)
In the same way that being lanky, bald, fat etc are immutable characteristics but taken as a pejorative.
