Think that was place his daughter used to run it I believe hence why he always went for a drink there.
I lived further down near all the pubs. It was the place to be going back about 25-30 years. Just thinking of the pubs that have closed since.... Mainbrace, the Irish bar next door, Turnpike, Rose, Hockneys, Hogshead, Bevvy, Cannon Junction, Chesters, Ringside, etc. I have probably forgot a few. On top of that, the ones still open like Haworth, Gardeners, Wetherspoons. Great days, pity it's gone downhill.
Yes still going strong and quite a big outdoor area now. Does particularly well when there is something on at City Hall.
I'm going back late 60's and my old man drank in the 'RAFA' (Royal Air Force Association)Club across the Rd from the Salvation Army building. Beverley Rd was lovely back then
You must be a similar age to me (nearly 50) I remember all those bars, for a brief period Bev road & newland ave was more popular for a night out than the town centre
Bev Rd in the 70's was a great run, plenty of pubs on the trail. We always did Bev Rd instead of town unless we had to be there was a special do.
Jesus Buck ...I haven't heard Carlin Peas being mentioned for a long, long time!!! My old Mam used to make them.
Was bev road a really good place a few decades ago? I always hated it purely becasue welly was miles from anywhere
Both northbound lanes were open earlier, (had my passport out today, I was in Lincolnshire) I joined the queue of traffic at 17:27, and reached the toll booths at 17:59, risible. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
To be fair, one is good on fish and chips whilst the other should be banned from being anywhere near them.
It was in the early/mid 1990s. A then mate of mine opened a semi-decent restaurant for the time period along there (maybe Italian food, can't remember?) around 1992/1993 and we had a lock in after doing a crawl along beverley road and slept on the restaurant floor. He was pissed off when woke up in the morning as we'd been drinking his expensive stock unknowingly/probably knowingly. Good memories. I also remember the pub over the road from the Welly used to be good to meet at the beginning as it was usually quiet early evening and could get seats. The landlord stupidly got in these inflatable sumo suits one time, and the pub got trashed... Bannisters, guard rails, tables and chairs every where.
