For a few years I was chatty with a Londoner who lived near me. He thought the standard of driving was appalling with guys driving way too fast. And how is the 30kmph limit in urbanisations going in your área? Here it is totally ignored and never monitored

Perhaps driving standards is oñe thing we can import from the US and Canada into Europe. No need to bother in the UK as the average speed is lower than in the 1960s!!!

I have had several narrow escapes! For me, the appalling standard of driving needs to be rectified. Sánchez needs to instruct the Guardia Civil to come down hard on reckless driving. And use the Jota accident to drive the message home!!

The fact he was only married a few weeks ago makes this more shocking

My urbanisation has no through route, so the only traffic is residential, business and golfers. Generally speaking the cars are driven at safe speeds but probably more 40kph than 30kph. I try to stay within the limits although it’s frustrating driving into Torrevieja on a dual carriageway, with properties that are set well back from the road, at 50kph when it used to be 80kph.
I agree that driving standards are lower in Spain and even though I think drivers are more careful with their speed, there are still plenty of wannabe racing drivers who overtake dangerously.
The worst part is the way roundabouts are used. When you are on the inside lane to go straight across the roundabout (second exit) and some idiot in the outside lane takes the first exit, even if it means cutting across your right of way. I see that happen every time I go out, not necessarily to me.

    Awful, awful news.
Thought the standard of driving in this country was pretty awful but weve just returned from a few weeks in Sicily where mad Italians seemed to be coming at me from all angles.

I'll second that, most cars have the marks of a less than affectionate nudge. We managed to escape unscathed but not without some near misses.

A few years ago I was teaching English, two Portuguese footballers who had just signed for Real Mallorca. They can confirm the madness of Italian drivers - they go through red lights when they think nothing is coming. Glad you survived Sicily where the major threat is not Mafia induced crime but crazy Sicilian drivers.

Nudge marks are rife here in Mallorca as guys park into the tightest of spaces.

I’ll never forget the first time I visited Paris and saw someone parallel parking in a backstreet by driving deliberately into the cars on either side to make more space.

I’ve watched that in Spain, only the car was trying to create space to get out of a parking spot.

Poland is the scariest I have personally experienced, worse than rush hour Manila because of the speeds people throw themselves around at.

The Uber times must break records there.
