I never trust Baz's reporting of fees now, he always seems to report them as low and then sensationalise how expensive players are down the line. Burstow for example, at the time reported as low 6 figures and a fee that was a 'no brainer', but now he regularly says that him and Joseph cost the best part of £5m. It can't be both!
How ridiculous. Deal done one day, can't afford it12 hours later ffs. Wasn't sold on him anyway but doesn't make us look very good.
Any chance of addressing the points, re finances, he raised? The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
Whatever the truth around this is, the optics are absolutely sh!te. Makes you wonder what our other targets will be thinking now
Acun seems to be copping a lot of flack here for this when I don’t think he’s done much wrong. Jared Dublin was noticeably iffy about the Barry signing question last night as someone who was sat on the table next to them and told Acun to follow the ‘Secret’ party line. After the phone call came in, Hodge and Dublin both left and didn’t return for sometime after too. None of Acun’s comments in the room as far as I can remember said it was anywhere near done. He spoke about them having spoken, how good he thinks he is and there was interest from all 3 in getting this done.
It wasn’t done. It wasn’t even briefed on our end that it was done. It came from the Villa end as a ‘done deal’. Cooper was still talking yesterday as it was being in progress.
He didn't say any player any specific coach pushed for was a huge waste of money. Just that 5 of the 10 biggest flops were manager picks As you'd know if you watched it. But given that during last year's Q and A he went in on Connolly then it's not a huge stretch...
It is very peculiar to be so close to signing Barry one day and then unable to afford him the next. Another club gazumping us would be one explanation, but it seems unlikely that it would be reported the way it has been (ie that we can't afford the deal as agreed) if that were true. It's quite accusatory the way that it's been reported and it doesn't paint us in a good light at all. We need to get our summer off to a good start this year to set the tone and show people we're serious again, and getting Barry would've done that. If it falls through then it will feel like this year's Kieffer Moore, except actually more high profile. Really not a good start if so.
If it’s due to wage demands and we’re not willing to meet them, I don’t mind if we walk away. Barry being one of our highest earners wouldn’t make much sense. If it’s the transfer fee, then it’s a bit more concerning. It suggests we’re dangerously close to our FFP limit. £3.5 million is actually quite a cheap deal since Villa wanted eight figures at least six months ago and didn’t want to sell him (only loan him out).
I’m not a corporate guy so I don’t know how the sponsorships are paid, but.. If the sponsorship was sold before the player arrived, is it possible they were trying to use the sponsorship money to help fund the transfer? It sounds ridiculous to read that back, but I can’t think of another reason why he’d be available for sponsorship without being our player. Unless they haven’t updated the website and last season’s players are still there.
Well as far as I can see Neither Villa or us have said it’s a done deal or not or that it has fell through best to just wait and see.
The guy at the Q&A last night asked Acun if he could confirm the athletics quote that they said in tweet 15 minutes earlier, not long after he went off with that call, so I assume someone told athletic it was a done deal and maybe it took Acun by surprise.
As was said by both Dublin and Acun yesterday. Nobody at the club said anything to suggest more than what had already been known in the media.
