Millar was very direct and loved to run at his man, but his end product was poor. I recall countless crosses going nowhere near anybody. BUT, he was still the best left winger we had last season. Barry would almost certainly be an upgrade, but at what price?
Maybe if we had players strategically positioned in the vicinity of the penalty spot his 'countless crosses' might've landed on someone's noggin occasionally? One of our biggest problems last season was lack of bodies in the box when we were attacking?
I think we tended to have Bedia up front when Millar played, and despite his height, he wasn't a target man and rarely won anything in the air. That said, I dont recall many of Millar's crosses ending anywhere near the pen spot. I think there was a lot that hit the first defender, and a decent proportion that were overhit and went out of play.
He only played 11 games,I'm sure it wouldn't take you too long to tally them up,create a percentage graph and do a presentation...
The problem with Miller, in my opinion, is not the quality of his crosses, it's the amount of times he loses the ball. Mainly because it was almost every time.
FBRef says he completed 3 successful crosses into the area, and that he attempted 37 in minutes equivalent to 6.9 games, which is 8.1% success rate. Belloumi was 9/58 in 9.1 games so 15.5% Kamara was 8/55 in 25.1 games. 14.5% success, but thats only 1 successful cross in every 3 games
41 take-on attempts, 16 successful. Tackled 19 times But, by far our most progressive player with the ball at his feet, averaging 199 yards of progress per 90. Belloumi was 115, Kamara 74, Gelhardt 70.
He's clearly not worth keeping then... Millar and Belloumi were to be our saviours this season, their absence through injury was the primary reason we never got going last season and narrowly avoided relegation and our owner raves about both. Now he (Millar) is sh!t?
I'd forgotten about Millar's questionable final ball until it was mentioned here. I think as OLM said, it's easy to lump him and Belloumi together and forget about the specifics of each. I think it was Stoke away where Millar put crosses into the stand two or three times. I think his left foot particularly was a bit unpredictable. But he was a very good dribbler and we really missed that. Bit like Grosicki in profile - he could cause teams a lot of problems with his pace and dribbling but he didn't half miss a lot of chances.
No need to start crying, Brady Yes - you picked up Millar had been spelt Miller. And it's player's. Or do we have multiple players called Millar?
Not quite, read my next post for more stats. He was by far our best option for left wing, dragging us up the pitch frequently, but his crossing wasn't great. I'd much rather have him on the left wing than many of the people who tried to fill in for him, so Burstow, Lincoln, Joseph, Gelhardt(?), Amrabat... I won't count Barry cos he barely got on the pitch
