I think just because we can spend £15m on him, and even if its a fair price, doesn’t mean we should. In the same way £40m is a fair price for Harvey Elliott, doesn’t mean we should pay it.

Everyone seems universal in their assessment that he’s a bit crap at defending. And we’re a team who will be doing a LOT of defending.

People are getting very hung up on fees and PSR. I'm sure we're all agreed that the club know the budget, financial situation, transfer market and PSR regulations better than any of us. So can we not just accept that any deal done deserves the benefit of the doubt and then we can judge a player purely on their merits as a footballer?

agree with this. And it’s on his merits as a footballer that I don’t think he’s worth the fees quoted. That’s got nothing to do with not being used to the premier league, and everything to do with what we could get with that money if we didn’t sign him.

all that said, I do trust the club 100% so will have to back him if he joins. I just think signing a defender who’s bad at defending is a bad idea in a relegation fight.

Alternatively though, we're possibly spending £20m on a keeper upgrade, £15-20m on an attacking left back and £15m on a very exciting French winger. Given the profile of those players, you can only assume that there's better to come in positions of real need. Maybe we're not planning to be the team doing the defending.

 

That’s my point though marra. I don’t think you can separate the two subjects. Any talk of the merits of a player has to involve the financial side, since it affects the other deals we can make. So although I trust the club not to spend us directly into oblivion, poor choices of player that don’t represent good value will inevitably hurt us in time.

 

I appreciate what you’re saying but I think it would be naive of us to assume we won’t be doing a lot of defending, even if we have the best window of all time.

But as fans, we can differentiate the 2 because we're not the ones making those decisions. We simply don't know the opportunity cost, only the hypothetical opportunity cost.

Which is a fair point, but if the club want an attacking left back, then I don't believe it's a decision made in naivety, I think it would be with a certain plan and style in mind that perhaps fans can't see yet.
