According to Transfmarket our net spends over the last three seasons are as above. Making the huge assumption that revenues cover all other spending, then we finish this summer £65m down and I believe you’re allowed to lose £105m? Losing 22/23 puts us in profit on transfer activity by £80m, even with two parachuted championship seasons, I agree with the forecast that we don’t need to sell this season, but that’s easier said than done of course if players want out.
Playing in the concacaf gold cup, which finishes 3/7, so may be delayed until after then? Guess he’d then need minimum 3 weeks holiday which wouldn’t be ideal, as would only get 2 weeks pre season. Does look a promising player though.
Just puts us in a bit of a tricky spot as we won’t sign a new number 1 permanently if Ramsdale could be back next season. Means Baz/McCarthy/new Lumley as options or we loan someone in instead of signing someone like Begovic. Not given it much thought as to which keepers might be available for loan domestically. Ramsdale does have a reasonable release clause allegedly, so little surprised nobody seems keen on activating it and taking him permanently.
Maybe Ramsdale is more keen on a loan move? It does sound like he wants to give Saints a chance to come back up and play for us again if we do. Personally, I think McCarthy is a decent enough number 1 for the Championship.
If its a choice between Bazunu & McCarthy, it'd be McCarthy all day long. If its a choice between McCarthy & a new keeper, I'd be going after a new keeper. Basically, McCarthy is the better option if they stay as they are, but I wouldn't necessarily want him as number 1 for the season.
Id imagine most fans would agree with you, if the club feels the same then loaning Ramsdale makes the recruitment harder as any keeper signing permanently knows that Ramsdale could be back next year, and it’s obviously very unlikely we sign a keeper better than him this summer. Basically finding a keeper better than McCarthy who would be fine joining permanently knowing about Ramsdale could be hard. Finding a keeper on loan who is better than McCarthy might also be a challenge. Much harder than signing a keeper permanently who is better than McCarthy/Baz if Ramsdale leaves.
I'm not sure its as clear cut as is being made out mind. I'd put it at above 50% chance that a)we dont go up OR b) we go up but someone forks out the £20m Ramsdale release clause and he leaves next summer. The loan fee would be decent and I think we could attract a good keeper to compete with Baz (or a loan keeper for a year to take over) with McCarthy as the steady option if neither are up to it. If Ramsdale did end up coming back then someone would be off but I dont see that as particularly high risk for them or us tbh.
That I really don't see happening TBH. If he doesn't leave permanently this summer it's because he chooses not to. It would be very odd to then leave next summer if we do up unless someone like Spurs or Man United come in for him.
I assume it is a relegation release clause, in which case it would likely not be active if we were promoted again.
