Like the Guardian and read it. Started a love of newspapers when I was a kid of 7 or 8 reading my Dads Daily Herald which I woud read back to front. Wish at the tine he had been taking the Times, would have learnt a hell of a lot more. Then in the fithties the Times was one of the premier newspapers in the World not any more. Later took the Telegraph which in the 60's and 70's was a decent newspaper now that has gone down hill. So now have a subcription to the New York Times which is top notch. As for the HDM read the news about City but nothing else and pine for the Green Sports Mail and Three Crowns.
I remember when we bought him a few of the lads on here who watch a lot of games were quite excited by his signing - as someone who never saw him play till he signed for us; was he really that good?
I remember when he was on loan at Boro from Wolves and his best quality was overlapping and whipping in crosses. He got a decent amount of assists that season. Luton signed him after that but he didn’t get much game time due to Doughty’s form. That being said, his defending was always suspect even during that first loan spell at Boro. Even under Rosenior, he was **** defensively and a massive fanny who ducked under headers and pulled out of tackles. There are other left-backs we could’ve spent £4.25 million on that would’ve been far better.
I also agree with AlRawdah and PLT about Giles (and Omur) Particularly as this new manager will actually use a back 5 when it suits, instead of doing something daft like playing a striker like Joseph at left back like the previous 3 managers would do just to try and stick to ‘the style’. Giles and also Drameh I think could both excel as wing backs. Giles I think also would have benefitted greatly from Oscar staying around, we saw glimpses of that in pre season, he was getting the balls into the places Oscar would sniff around. He needs someone to aim at.
He’s been a huge disappointment. Even getting his ‘dream’ move back to Boro, he’s flattered to deceive. I can’t see him getting back to any meaningful level. Looks like he’s drifted a long way off the levels that persuaded clubs to pay a reasonable fee for him.
I thought this, coupled with the failed return to boro we could be looking at a player knowing it’s his last chance saloon maybe?
Thanks for that, gents - like most of us I don't like to slag players off, I can forgive a player with some technical failings if they're going to work their nuts off, put their bodies on the line and give everything to the team, from what I've seen he's not even nearly doing that. As someone else has said, this season could be his 'last chance saloon' - we'll see!
He’s clearly lost his confidence, who’s to say with a bit of nurturing, he can recover previous form. With a £4.5 m asset currently worth probably six figures, it would be better than writing him off for scrap. I have family and friends who were really enthusing over him and pissed off when we signed him. I do recall those early games under Ros, it was clear he wasn’t suppose to overlap, and he didn’t know where to go. He then had an injury, the crowd started getting on his back and it all seemed to go downhill after that.
Random one, the guy claims to work with Shelveys dad. He rarely tweets, so doesn't seem the type to make **** up for attention. He's hardly played in 2 years so not sure what he's like these days, but on a one year deal I wouldn't be against it. If we have to sell Alzate, i'd use the money on Zambrano. Shelvey can then be a stop gap until Zambrano and Matazo are back.
I’d take Shelvey, have always rated him, good deep lying midfielder who’s better with the ball than any of our current players.
Jakirovic seemingly likes his full backs to cross so he may get the best out of him who knows. I’d still like to see him **** off
As a stop gap for Zambrano/Matazo coming back, Shelvey would be ok? on a short term deal. Depends if he is fit and can stay fit. He's not played much in the last couple of years.
Pretty sure Rannochia was about 6’7 too, be good to have that in the back line, guy has a few similarities
I thought he did that first season. I think what's happened since maybe colours people's memory of him a bit. Like Kalman alluded to he was weak defending the back post for a goal at Leeds which was poor, but overall I thought he did OK.
Not a fan of having Shelvey even as a stopgap until Zambrano returns. Zambrano’s not available until November and by then, he wouldn’t have played competitive football or trained professionally for 12 months. He might take several months to get up to speed after his ban ends. Matazo won’t be available until December and like Zambrano, will take a while to get up to speed. We need a defensive midfielder who can go straight into the starting XI this summer and I don’t think someone who has played 330 minutes of football in 12 months is the answer. We cannot keep ****ing about and neglecting this position.
I've always rated Shelvey, always sorry we couldn't try and get him years ago but we didn't have the money. He's got a hell of a shot on him too.
Spent time with a couple of Turkish clubs over the last 2 years before joining Burnley earlier this year, but as you say he’s had little game time. If he’s fit enough to start and the stopgap until the injured/banned return theory is true then I think it would be a good signing.
