Thanks for the detailed reply. At this point we'll just have to do the old agree to disagree thing. You have thought about it a lot more than me. As I said yesterday, it's not something I've ever given a great deal of thought to. I respect your opinion but for me, the CWC is just another step in the wrong direction. I still can't see past the fact that it's not about advancing football but a giant money grab.

    That maybe so
I am not saying the format is perfect or indeed that it was perfect
I am and have been saying that the CWC is to me a very valid completion and it should be played

In the UK we tend to be very snobbish about these sorts of things

the discussion going on is something close to proof

some would rather have the same comp twice rather than try to work a valid CWC out

the original WCs were a farce
You could argue that the cup comps in this country are too (well up until this season lol)

I just feel the CWC is worth some attention
    That’s all lol

You're right mate. That's why I said 'another' step in wrong direction. Enjoy your coaching session <ok>

I never suggested that, apologies if it seemed that way. I merely said that I don't want that.
You like the idea of it, so you're not being force-fed - I don't like the idea of it much so all the hype trying to make me want it feels like it's being forced on me.
Winning it doesn't make you the best team in the world any more than the FA Cup winners are the best team in the land.
In both cases they very well might be the best, but not merely because of that particular competition.

I watched the Dortmund v Fluminense game early (nothing else on).

Dortmund looked **** after half time and then threw aload of subs on which broke up the flow of the game. They looked like it was pre-season.

Fluminense looked up for it and fit, which is no surprise as it's currently midway through the Brazillian season and the S.American clubs like to show they can beat the European ones as they are often looked down on. However they lacked the real quality to beat a knackered Dortmund.

And this is the problem, there is too much of a mis-match in the quality of teams and all the Euro teams have literally just finished a long and tiring season to ensure good competitive games.

Also the commentator was annoying claim Dortmund obviously hadn't done any 'pre-season' work. I mean clearly as this should be holiday for them, pre-season starts next month.

    Stadium was full though.

Whilst I understand it doesn’t make you the best in the world it’s still the title
But for me it’s more about playing teams you don’t normally play

    case and point
We play Man City in league x 2
We draw them in the group stages of CL and in the knockout - so X 3
We meet them in the League Cup Final x1
    And FA Cup 3rd round x 1
So play City 7 times in the season

I would happily play Boca Juniors and Fluminese say instead of the League cup in a CWC

and if you want to extend it
Forget PL and CL as they are set but say we play
Crewe Bolton and Arsenal in FA Cup
and MK Dons Burnley and Doncaster in League Cup

I would happily again trade the league cup or the FACup games to play teams from another continent and countries
    It’s just different
    As I say
I like the idea - if it helps I am the same at grassroots
I try to play different leagues and comps every season - just to mix it up for the boys and girls

not overly fussed if we win or lose just like variety - I find it more entertaining than seeing the same old same old

Not really arguing with any of that, and some of the games might be entertaining. My main point still stands, and that is that the load on PL players is just too great.
Your solution is to remove them from some domestic competitions, but I don't want to see that any more than I want to see the PL replaced by a European Super League.

How about we invite the South American teams into the league cup :)
I actually think we should do that with the Scottish teams lol <laugh>

    Sorry also - genuine question
What do you like about two pretty much identical cup competitions - not sure how we ended up with two but do we really need two ?

I have often thought that the Carabao cup should be open for all football league and PL teams who arent in european competition.
That way, the clubs who are playing in Europe get some relief in their fixture list, and it also ensures a new team qualifies for Europe every year, one that isnt already in European competition.
Sounds like a good idea to me.
Think about it, with no Liverpool, City, Arsenal, Chelsea, Newcastle or Villa in the Carabao Cup it means teams like Brentford, Brighton and Fulham get an easier shot at Silverware and to qualify for Europe.

My answer to that is the same as Bod's above - I said as much in an earlier post.
Most English teams aren't in European competitions, so giving them an extra domestic cup is manageable.

Another aspect of international club competitions, which we've only touched on briefly, is the cost to the fans.
TV and the internet might make the world seem like a global village, but it isn't. All of these competitions contribute greatly to air travel with its attendant issues, and a huge personal cost to travelling fans. All so the people behind it all can rake in more and more money from something that is no more than a travelling circus.

So ban all European/international comps and just stick to domestic ones yes?
