He was brought in as assistant manager tho. He was then promoted when Dean Smith went to Villa

Wilder to be sacked by Sheff Utd, O'Neil not in frame
Latest by Sky Sports News' Tim Thornton and Rob Dorsett:

Chris Wilder will be sacked by Sheffield United in the next few days following a review of last season when the team missed out on promotion to the Premier League in the play-off final.

Contrary to reports elsewhere, Sky Sports News understands the former Wolves boss Gary O'Neil will not be the man to replace Wilder.

The Blades won 90 points last season - a total which would have equalled their club record, but for a 2-point deduction imposed by the EFL - and that tally would have been enough to go up automatically in eight of the last 10 seasons.
After four successive defeats in the run in, United were 15 minutes from victory at Wembley, before two late goals saw Sunderland promoted instead.

Despite that near-miss, the US-based consortium COH Sports, led by Steven Rosen and Helmy Eltoukhy, have decided they want to bring in a new head coach.

They completed a takeover last December, when Wilder was already in charge of the team.
That will not be O'Neil, however, who was under consideration for the role, but the Blades bosses have decided they want to go in a different direction.

Sky Sports News has been told there is no rift with the board, and in fact Wilder has an excellent relationship with Rosen. This change in manager is motivated by the new regime wanting to bring in their own person to lead the football operation. COH are determined to utilise a data-led approach to recruitment and play, which is something Wilder was open to, following the takeover.

At the start of last season, Wilder was in charge during a huge rebuild, with 22 players leaving Bramall Lane, and the average age of the squad coming down to 24.

Whilst it’s thought the owners do recognise and appreciate how Wilder has added value to the squad, that has not been enough for him to keep his job.

I know he's like marmite but it is kind of harsh having amassed the points etc - however he did show himself to be one-dimensional in the final and perhaps this is what they are trying to change. For me some of his reactions (Plymouth) as a supporter would have left a bad taste and I can imagine it would be one of those sackings where the fans may be happier than they admit

Got zero time for Wilder so I must say i'm pleased to see that news. The new owners there need to get the appointment right though, huge risk to sack someone who got 90 points (92 technically, I'm sure Wilder will remind everyone of that:emoticon-0140-rofl:)

Rumours that Selles will be replacing Wilder. Think that's a great appointment personally, will take time but I don't think they'll regret the decision if they do actually give him the time and backing he needs.

think next season will be the hardest and most competitve Championship on record,

you will Ipswich and saints there, possibly Leicester depending on what happens to them, Coventry, Norwich, WBA, Milwall( the bald headed snake has a good record) Wrexham, Birmingham all there or there abouts

Doubt he'll get any time. Top 2 next season will be the target.

Working amongst Sheff Utd fans. Split on Wilder. More than a few think he should get another go at it. Tbf 90 points would normally see you keep any job.

Apparently they are massively into AI when it comes to player recruitment. They maybe should try and let AI pick the team <doh>

It’s a bit harsh on him since he got over 90 points, usually that’s enough for top two.

However, he spent £10m on Cannon and dropped him to basically an unused sub very early on. The gamble they took on overloading their squad with strikers to get up didn’t pay off and now they might be financially in a spot of bother. So I can see why he’s been given the boot.

Wilder will be a replacement for any club looking at sacking their current coach,

still dont like him, his antics in recent games just shows what an utter Arsehat he is,

still cant get over how poor and awful he was after the final

Edwards is an interest one. Got Luton promoted but if you ask most of their fans they can't stand him. At least the 3 or 4 I know can't. They put the blame for their recent relegation squarely on him.
