Simply the sounds of summer, Pet Sounds was a seminal album of the 60s and Wilson was the key player. RIP...

When I was young their songs about sun, surf and sand seemed to be about a different world to me in rainy Paddington.

Have you seen Love and Mercy, film with John Cusack playing an older Brian Wilson? Very sad film, starts with Wilson on all sorts of drugs trying to get Pet Sounds going, against everything the rest of the band wanted to do. It then flips between time spans to the older Wilson being badly manipulated by his management team, and then rescued and weined of the drugs they had him on by his second wife. I'm sure they'll have that lined up on BBC in next couple of days

My wife has just reminded me that she saw Wilson a few years ago....an evening I had deleted from my memory as her friend only had one spare ticket so I couldn't go! Said it was a sad evening, he was in the early stages of Alzheimers, and had to be led to his piano....but once he was there he put on an amaziing performance. So gutted I wasn't there!

I don’t think there is a better album from the 60’s than Pet Sounds

Pet Sounds was definitely a music changing / shaping album but my personal favourite was Holland, from early 70’s.

Carol Kaye, from the wreaking crew ( bass player, studio musos who play on many Beach Boys albums, along with many other famous bands ) introduce new bass techniques to various Wilson acclaimed songs........... Brian's all time favourite song was 'Be My Baby' by The Ronettes. He then wrote 'Don't Worry Baby' because of it.

Interesting that they used Phil Spector's Wrecking Crew, there's definitely the 'Wall of Sound' influence in many of their records. Another piece of useless info is that Sonny & Cher were among the backing vocalists on the Ronettes 'Be My Baby'...

This is a 1968 live TV version of 'Good Vibrations', the harmonies are amazing and note the very early use of a Theremin...

Sooper, have you heard the ‘Smile’ version of Good Vibrations? Quite a bit different wording too. I will try to post it if you want, on your music thread.

If anyone needs to see how great Brian Wilson was watch this, I don't think it matters whether you know musical theory or not ...
