Can’t go to anything without them turning it into football I saw a comedian in Newcastle a few month back and they’re were even chanting toon toon at that, weird behaviour
Even if Sam Fender was a mackem, who sat next to me at the SoL, who bought me a programme, pie and pint every game and gave me lifts to away games.....id still think his music is weak as piss pop rock ****e.
People living in the NE probably don't see patterns that exiles do. At one time, Keegan/Bobby Robson/etc, the public saw 'Geordies' as passionate and amusing which is fair enough. That's how people generally see the whole of the NE in my experience. People in London, for the Wembley weekend, certainly did and even the Sheff Utd fans praised us as being friendly, decent and enthusiastic. At the same time there seems to be a feeling that the Mags are really overplaying their part. They just lay it all on too thick, from the accent to the flag waving, and it's become irritating. They've become the 'bloke at work' who was funny once but keeps cracking the same joke until he becomes one.
Summed up perfectly mate, people I work with who aren’t local refer to them as a cult, could always switch the L for a N and still be right
I’ve said many times though, I don’t know where they come from. I’ve worked with Geordie and Mag lads for most of my adult life and I’ve met maybe 2/3 out of literally thousands who are like the chumps everywhere online. I have always found them throughly decent. There’s banter and I love that cos I can hold my own, but I just don’t see the hatred, I don’t hear any of them giving it ‘6 easy points’ and that, I don’t see any of them going out of their way to abuse Mackems. Pinks seats, empty seats? Never hear it. They openly admit cheesey chips are a delicacy. They are also in the main level headed about their club, its status. They are appropriately hopeful and expectant that they will progress, but where these morons that get them their name crawl out from, I’ll never know. It’s a shame that in their case the minorities voices are the loudest and that’s how they are now perceived. Flip side. Everywhere I go abroad, all around the world, folk have good things to say about us.
Accents. Watch George Gently. As you would expect the majority of actors aren’t from the North East. They will have done a crash course in ‘Geordie’, but like a lot of actors, in general they over emphasise things. It’s obvious that the accent is forced. Bit like a lot of the Newcastle accents we hear today. Even over here when I hear them speak they’re trading on it.
I left work in Elswick about 3.00pm ish on Thursday and heading towards the redheugh bridge I seen loads in mags tops. I wondered what was going on, thinking they cant be having a pre-season game yet surely. Turns it was for the sam fender gig. Wtf would you wear a football shirt to a gig? Ah, but its them....they've got to prove their geordieness at every opportunity. Then it was the same on friday... Absolute bunch of sad sacks. Anyway, here's Mayenda's review of the gig....
A fans site on Facebook- and now the next day they are wallowing in delight in their claim that they have “ rattled” us
Hahaha, "Rattled us". I just find it odd that even his management team don't have a word in his ear and tell him it could effect potential income. But, each to their own. He's a Sheilds lad done well. The people of Shieds should be proud that a local lad from Sheilds is doing well in the charts. If I were from Sheilds I'd definitely support someone from my local area of Sheilds. You could say after the two lasses from little mix also from Sheilds and now him being from Sheilds that Sheilds is back on the map.
I travel to home games on the Kings Cross train from Edinburgh to Newcastle. There are always tourists and other visitors so it's a pretty mixed bunch. It's ludicrous how 'Geordies', often with Mag shirts on non-match days, interact with the other passengers. They'll be sitting opposite some Chinese lad, or other non-British person, and deliberately use slang words like worky-ticket or tappy lappy they know won't be understood. That gives them the opportunity to explain, in great detail, and go through a litany of Geordie words and phrases. They absolutely f*cking hate it when I step in and correct them when they get the origin of words and and phrases wrong ... ... or when I remind them that not all Geordies are Newcastle supporters and not all Mags are Geordies
His name rhymes with Mayenda. That's literally the only reason he gets a mention. You'd think a 'songwriter' would pick up on that
Sat in one of the bars in Ponteland airport and low and behold a family of mags walk in - all dressed up in their brand new tops! God it looks even worse close up. The black looks washed out rather than the sharp look from last year's kit
From my experience working and traveling around, after them being genuinely popular under Keegan and then under Robson, they became a subject of ridicule and mockery pretty quickly. It was the entitled behaviour of the '92ers that did it if course. Prior to Hall, there was very little of that. Now, as they openly and cheerfully chant about being "Saudi Mags" and cravenly grovel at the feet of a notorious despot, it is no longer ridicule. They are really disliked, to put it mildly.
Just been to Newcastle to take my new guitar to get set up (as that’s where I bought it). They are absolutely everywhere. So many thought there must be a match on. Nope. It’s to go see Sam Fender! Stadium of Light had about 3 SAFC shirts for foo fighters! It’s like they have nothing else to wear!! much the same as @Snaggey experience!!
also had the misfortune to be there today .. in years gone by I’ve seen fewer shirts on display even on match day. Today , families , best mate girls , young couples dressing alike … nauseous
