It's easy to forget football is now a global game. I rather dismissed Senegal in discussion with my PSIL (Probable Son In Law) but he plays FIFA quite a bit on his game console, including assembling his own on-line team. He's therefore a bit more aware of who's where, especially at lower transfer values. He said it wouldn't be easy.
Among the starters, there were 8 Senegalese players who currently turn out in top-tier European leagues. Of those, six made up Senegal's midfield and attack. In many ways, it's not a dissimilar mix to the England team, given that several of the real big hitters in the EPL are almost no-go areas for English players.
Diatta - Monaco
Niakhaté - Lyon
Gueye - Everton
Diarra - Strasbourg
Camara - Monaco
Ndiaye - Everton
Sarr - Crystal Palace
Jackson - Chelsea
All three substitutes play in top leagues too.
Gueye - Villarreal
Sabaly - Real Betis
Dia - Lazio
Koulibaly is playing in Saudi Arabia now but played 230 games for Napoli and also had a season at Chelsea. Similarly, the keeper played in Ligue 1 and at Chelsea.
Nevertheless, both of the two games this week have been very poor for England. I watched a bit of Portugal v Spain at the weekend, I shudder to think what either of them would have done to the England we've seen this week.
