My 2p worth of thoughts on latest chat. 1 person doesn’t rate O’Shea (that’s what a forum is for - don’t have to all have the same opinion) but think most fans including me believe he’s good enough for the PL. In regards to the £150 odd million spent, this was all spent on younger players from the championship so if sold, would probably make a profit on most of them. This was all we could do. No established PL players would join a relegation battle which is what everyone was expecting. 1 of the issues with back to back promotions was that we had no chance to set up a European / worldwide scouting network. Couple of ifs now. If we go back up and we fail again, then & only then (IMO) can we start questioning the manager
Mark Ashton has said we didn’t spend money on established, experienced Premier League players because they wanted higher salaries and wouldn’t accept a relegation wage cut. I can see the thinking - particularly as he made a point of not wanting to risk the club’s future like the last time we got relegated from the Prem - but I think we need to be a bit more aggressive next time. If we could bring in better experienced players on loan compared to this season - that would have helped. The £150m transfer spend figure is bandied around frequently, but we didn’t blow it all in one summer. Some of that money would be spread over the player contract length. A bit of a cynical accounting trick, but the big clubs all do it these days. Our club accounts are widely considered to be one of the most transparent in English football - from people like Kieran Maguire. With the dry financial comment out the way - if Thomas Frank moves to Spurs, I’ll be worried. Brentford apparently have McKenna down as their main target. As I said earlier in the thread, they’re likely to lose both Mbeuno and Wissa - their two best attacking players. With Frank going - who has done a brilliant job there - could it be too risky a move for McKenna, taking over a popular, successful long-term club legend? Despite this, I think he should take the job. He’ll have an established, proven PL squad and the recruitment team there have a knack for signing quality players. He’s far more likely to keep Brentford up and attract the interest of a bigger club than he is getting us back up to the Premier League and keeping us there.

My 2 penny's worth. McKenna was totally out of his depth in the PL, he should done far better bringing our League 1 squad into the PL and then spending the same amount that most PL clubs have spent on their subs benches. He's too 1 dimensional, all we played was tippy happy football from the back and there's clearly been problems with squad morale which questions his man management.

Apparently it’ll all be wrapped up and confirmed in the next two days. I imagine Brentford will ask to talk to McKenna, but the rumour is they’ll likely promote from within (like they did with Frank) and go for Justin Cochrane, the betting favourite. He has a positive reputation there and recently joined as part of Tuchel’s England coaching team (as well as his Brentford day job). If McKenna does depart, Ashton will have his shortlist ready. If it’s resolved quickly, I’d like Danny Rohl from Sheffield Wednesday - he’s done a brilliant job there. I hear he’s more interested in a move to the Bundesliga. But I think Ashton will go British and I suspect one of the first managers he’ll talk to is Michael Carrick.

Don't get what all the fuss is about with o'shea. Part of a defence that's shipped on 160 goals in 2 seasons. Id ne happy to get any profit on him. As for burgess, solid, but again, nothing spectacular. I"d be happy with wolfy and greaves as our main cb pairing

Yes, he is out of contract. Spain is an attractive proposition compared to the Prem and endless games in the Championship. Imo, there is too much footie these days. Players and us need a break.
He was only signed last season so had nothing to do with goals conceded in the championship. Think he is a very good leader who woul be excellent in the championship. Burgess will be a miss (amazing as he was in & out of the team in league 1 before KMC came in. If we are left with greaves and Wolfy, we will need more because baggott is not up to it
Although the defence hasn't covered itself in much glory over the last couple of years, I think we'd need to invest to replace the potential departures of Tuanzebe, O'Shea, and Burgess. In the case of Burgess, it's worth reflecting on how well he's done to turn around his career under McKenna. A move to sunny Spain (to join our beacon of sunny Spanish optimism on this forum) won't be begrudged by me. Particularly as Burgess could be felt hard done by missing out on more starts last season behind Greaves. Ben Johnson and Harry Clarke might be serviceable right-backs for the Championship, but I'd rather we bring in someone who has better potential to make the step up to the Premier League - should we go straight back up. Woolfenden and Greaves are a more than solid centre-back partnership at Championship level. I think we'll need a more physical, experienced centre-back to come in though. Both Woolfenden and Greaves are similar in their attributes and style of play. I'm not convinced that Baggott is capable of stepping up to be a squad player in a side pushing for automatic promotion. On the topic of the Frank to Spurs move, he has taken most of his coaching team to Spurs, including Brentford's potential internal Frank replacement, Justin Cochrane. That leaves a lot of holes in Brentford's coaching team. Scott Parker has been added to their shortlist, according to media reports. A sports reporter from the Sun claims McKenna is staying at Ipswich, but possibly take that with a generous pinch of salt given the source.
