Over the last few years I've come around to love a lot of 60s music. Creedence Clearwater revival, The Rolling Stones, Dylan and The Animals. Not so fussed with the Beatles.
This bloke was a genius. Smile is some kind magic album ! I’m 47 and got into the beach boys through flight of the navigator as a lad fast forward to SMILE being realised properly after Brian’s mental illness battle and I must have listened to that album obsessively for weeks.
If you listen to the notes he plays they shouldn’t work, they are all over the shop and yet they do !
I was busy with loads of other bands, girls, etc, so didn't really listen to them at the time ... ... but they were a very good band and virtually 'invented' a new genre of music, not many bands do that.
Just read that they employed studio musicians when recording albums. Brian was the producer and would drive them mad doing stuff over and over again til he got the exact sound he wanted. One said that "it was all in his head". But he was right. He knew exactly what he was doing even if the musicians didn't.
Posted this over the road but I thought I’d post here as well. Isn’t it weird how you don’t realise how important something is to you until it’s gone. First really heard the beach boys in the film flight of the navigator “I get around” ( as an impressionable kid) and then from my mam and dads 60s tapes (good vibrations) Then as a teen I got into the Beatles in a big way I watched the Beatles anthology documentary and saw the mutual influence the Beatles had on Brian Wilson and vice-versa. Then I got into Pet Sounds and most recently Smile (which I’m listening to now). Listened to this obsessively and it weirdly resonated with me while I was in a fairly bad place around 2008. Fell asleep few times whilst listening as well and I think it got really my psyche in that I would put it on every-time I wanted to go to sleep. Like loads have already said. Genius.
Musical legend. I remember first listening to "I get Around" and loving the B side more...."Don't Worry Baby". So many great songs.
Apparently Mavers just couldn't get the sound out of his head at all. Pretty sure his dislike lf that album they released drove him to smack.
