I'm wary a little bit tbh, I think we need to add a proper high-quality talent who's likely going to be ready to go in the PL and we are just being linked to long-term young lads atm in that position. Plenty of time of course but I want us to be targeting more ready to go players

They're all just links mate. I think we're as likely to not sign ANY of the players we've currently been linked to as we are to sign one of them. Long summer of it.

Which is why i'm so against Henderson. Takes up room and money which could be taken either by a prospect or an actual ready made PL player. If we sign Miller, Gray and Uche i'd be very happy.

I think we need 3 central midfielders, 2 of which for the role Jobe played for us. Miller is one that would fit this by the sounds of the comments above, I'd want him to be the alternative with proven quality brought in ahead of him in that position. If hes brought in to have the same challenge Rigg has of competing with Le Fee then I think thats good business, just wouldnt be one to start initially for me (but thats pure assumption based on age and level hes played at).

The teams hes linked with though is promising and thats where our good work over the past 4 years will give us an advantage to stand out over those other clubs.

The percentage of players we're linked with, compared to signings, is tiny …

… what surprises me is the criticism the club attracts because of spurious media reports.

Our signings so far are excellent in my opinion.

I actually prefer him as a 10 than 6 at the minute, but he's sort of in a similar situation to Rigg where the world (midfield) is his oyster and he could become anything long term.

Think they'll both play in the 8 long term.

Replace Jobe with --> Brick **** house number 8 or 10 from France (Le Fee to play in the other position)
Replace Browne with --> Lennon Miller / Charlie Gray
Replace Salis with --> Brick **** house number 6 from France

I'd be bringing in a 4th centre mid to replace Harrison Jones who I'd be loaning out. This one could be Henderson or another youth player.

Every link seems to be us thrown in with around 3 or 4 others.

Difficult to know which ones are genuine.

I'm enjoying the links because there's nothing else to do but as you say we have to be careful not to get carried away with any of them as they're just links.

I won't be getting excited about a player until one of the big hitter journalists (Fab, Santi, Pletterberg, The Athletic, Sky) link us.

One random tidbit - Chris Wetherspoon in the Athletic points out that Sunderland's player profit in 2024-25 is a club record and on its own is already higher than our total revenue in 2023-24, which was £38.2m

That puts some great context on us achieving £40m from Jobe and Watson alone. It's more than the club made in 23-24 and that's before you even consider prize money, ticket sales, sponsorship and all other revenue streams.

It may be wrong but I’m instantly dismissing as bollocks any link in which our name is thrown in with Leeds, Burnley and/or the lesser lights of the Premier League. Just reeks of basic agent driven use of the media and/or lazy ‘journalism’/rumour mongering.

Wetherspoon in the Athletic also says that the sell on to Birmingham was 15% of PROFIT but the sell on to Sunderland from Dortmund is 15% total.

The accounting profit on Jobe we get to book for PSR purposes for this season is £20.7m to £22.8m. This significantly boosts not just our ACTUAL budget but also our ALLOWED budget under PSR for a few years.

As an aside, I never saw eye to eye with Chris on Sunderland stuff but I'm really glad to see he's landed on his feet as the Athletic's main finance writer. Dream gig for him.

I’m still seeing our fans decrying that we’re ‘easy pickings’ and moaning that we’re a selling club.

Like him a lot. Would be interested to see how we use him, possibly in our 10 role?

It's been said to death but even if we are a selling club (we're not), there's nothing wrong with being a selling club. It means you're buying and developing players that other clubs want. And if other clubs want your players it means you're doing well. And if you're doing well why would you change that strategy?

That said - we're not a selling club and come September will have a significant net spend of probably over £50m

If its 15% on total sale that is incredible, I thought it would of been on profit. There's every chance that this deal will end up with us taking in over £40m.

With you on Chris, dont agree with everything he says in relation to SAFC but he was one of the early ones to question Donald when he was still in a bit of a honeymoon period and got ridiculed for it. He was ultimately proven right in the main and stood firm when he was getting a lot of grief. Fair play to the lad, class gig to get to discuss footy at the Athletic.
