So over five weeks since the season ended it looks like we have our man and our summer planning can finally kick off. Hopefully that lost time doesn't prove costly like it did last year. We're not the only club to do this but I don't have a lot of faith in our ability to make up the time compared to others.
It’s difficult to get excited about any appointment knowing whoever gets the job will probably be gone by Christmas – and almost certainly gone next summer. Baz saying there’s a six figure compensation fee. Hopefully it’s on the low end of six figures.
Acun said himself the other week that we're not looking to sign players until after the manager is sorted. Selles, as managers often do, was on about us doing our planning for summer business back in the early spring, getting ahead of the game. If managerial input is a key factor in our recruitment then clearly it can't happen when we don't know who the manager will be, and much of the planning for a Selles summer must have gone out of the window when he was sacked. I think it's pretty clear that players are lined up and sounded out well in advance of transfers actually happening, and it cannot be a good thing us going into the summer with the brakes on while we sort a manager whilst other clubs are ready to go and able to tell players exactly what they're offering, what role they'll play in what system and all the rest of it. I said all this this time last year too and I was hardly proven wrong.
I agree that it's hardly ideal (changing coaches as transfer window starts etc) but the planning will have been ongoing and our new coach will have been in discussion with the owner and Dublin for some time now. No, I don't know this for fact, but common sense tells me so.
Pretty pleased with this, had a good feeling about it ever since I was told his name in confidence a few days before it broke publicly. He is apparently very pragmatic which is exactly what we need.
That means if you survive and are still in role after 6 months, you will be presented with a carriage clock for length of service. Good luck, you’ll need it!
To be fair, extend it to 12 months and he's probably one of the longest serving managers in the Championship.
Apparently it’s 8 years ago today we got Slutsky as manager! 6-1 v Birmingham was the highlight, I was actually at that game.
