Here I was thinking we’d largely avoid another summer McKenna saga! If Spurs do sack Ange, then Thomas Frank is a very sensible appointment. Likewise, McKenna would be a good fit for Brentford. I wouldn’t blame him moving to a settled Premier League side than go through a high-pressure promotion scrap in the Championship. Annoyingly, Liam Manning - an often-touted McKenna replacement - has just taken the Norwich job! Let’s hope Spurs stick with Ange. They’ve been terrible in the league this season, but winning their first trophy since 2008 and getting Champions League football is a decent achievement.
Apparently Spurs will make their decision on Ange “this week”. I know his reputation took a bit of battering this season with Middlesbrough, but Carrick as a potential replacement for McKenna (if he goes) wouldn’t be the worst move. There are several Championship vacancies - potentially a further one if Leicester sack Van Nistelrooy - so there will be plenty of managerial changes in the Championship this summer.
It does seem mad sacking Carrick. They did quite well last year and only just missed the play offs this season. Who will Boro get that will be an improvement?
Might not be a bad thing for us or him if that were to happen now. If it happened in August it would be a disaster. There's another rebuilding job to do over the summer.
Everyone knew he was leaving. I’m very happy it’s been done early so we can start sorting out the squad for next season. Need 2x central midfielders and a striker
Selling in June signing in July works great with PSR calculations, I’d imagine part of the reason Ipswich agreed on £10m in instalment, you still get that June boost and Chelsea probably wanted to wait for July
We've been linked with O'Shea today, I wouldn't worry though as we are being linked with 3-4 new names daily
Wolves, Leeds and Burnley apparently interested in O'Shea. Wouldn't be too bothered if he moved on, to be honest, I think Tuanzebe should be our RCB anyway as I think that position suits him better than full back.
Think O’Shea would be captain next year as Morsy unlikely to play every game even if he stays. Would be gutted to see O’Shea leave but would be looking at around £25m as he is on a long term contract (think it’s 2029)
I'm not surprised that O'Shea's been linked away - he's been our best defender this season. As I mentioned a month or so ago, O'Shea is the perfect fit as an affordable, decent defender for newly promoted teams. If we're able to make a decent profit on him, then fair enough. Losing him would reinforce the requirement for investment in defence. We need to get more solid than we have been over the last couple of years.
On a wider note - this is potentially where our transfer model is going to let us down. How are we meant to challenge for automatic promotion and equip ourselves for a better return to the Premier League if we're going to sell two of our most consistent, better players from this season? Our hands were tied with the Delap release clause, but we've surely got to be asking for £30 million - at a minimum - if teams want O'Shea?
O’Shea was absolutely dire (although he did okay at full back). He would be first out the door if it were up to me swiftly followed by Davis. If we could get any kind of transfer fee for either of them I’d bite your hand off.
I read an article that Forest and Newcastle were considering bidding £25m for Leif, that shows what nonsense it all is, he’s not worth anywhere near that amount. Saying that, the issue is replacing these players. The best replacements will be in the Championship but persuading a rival to sell is near impossible Look at the PL and it’s going to be a loan or journeyman, sometimes best not taking the money. Take Delap, how much to replace him, no £20m striker is going to want to play in the Championship unless already playing for a Sheffield or Southampton then they’re not going to sell Several PL lower teams are all in the hunt for a striker, Sheffield will lose Hamer so be looking for an attacker. Lots of rumours, in and outs to come!!
No need to replace. We already have better players than these two in the squad. Townsend always outperformed Davis whenever he came in.
“Absolutely dire”?! Pull the other one, Yorkie, the guy won our Player of the Year award! He was our most reliable defender by some margin. Yes, he made mistakes and yes he had some poor games (who didn’t) - but he’s someone who I think would’ve been one of the first names on the team sheet in the Championship next season.
