Today in 1783 the Montgolfier brothers gave the first public demonstration of their new flying machine, imaginatively called a Montgolfière. It was in Annonay, France and the flight lasted around ten minutes covering a total of 2 kilometres at an altitude between 1600 and 2000 metres.
