This is why I'm glad the board don't tend to listen to fans. It also depends on the structure of the deal. Levy will want any deal to suit Spurs. By waiting we'll get a better deal.
Have you been watching the same Tyler Dibling the rest of us have??? £25m? I agree that what he is worth is what clubs will pay but seriously, do you think Spurs (Levy) have ever paid over the top prices for anyone? For me, Dibling is worth 40-50m on potential alone and as you say, the right club/coach would get the best out of him.
There's nothing wrong with sticking a high fee on a young player who has caught the attention of the football world. Saints are not in the position where they are desperate to sell and waiting to see what interest there is in the lad first is sensible. Of course buying clubs are going to say in public that it's too much, it's all part of the cat and mouse game of football transfers. What they are buying is massive potential of a player still in his teens, he could possibly turn out be the next Gareth Bale with a bit more experience. I think that he was extremely poorly managed by Juric which saw his performance level dip but I saw enough in the early part of the season where he was making seasoned PL defenders look silly to know that he will be a top talent.
But he is, as we don't need to sell him. If your house is worth £500k and you are ok with the mortgage (sure it's a struggle at times, but you are ok with it), then if someone offers you 500k for it, you'll say no thanks, it's ok. If they come back with 750k you may think hmmm, maybe I am open to a move. Not only that, if your house is on a bit of land with approved planning permission then the potential is more. So yep, it is valued at 500k, you don't need to sell, but it has the potential to be worth more to a developer who may say to you I will give you 750k for it. It's that potential Spurs are paying for. Using this same analogy, imagine if you said ok it's yours for 500k and then 2 years later the developer has worked on it and you saw it for sale for £1.5 million.
I think you need to factor in his ceiling value. Yes £55mm may seem a lot, but his potential ceiling value could be enormous, if he continues to develop over next 3 to 4 years. Unless we get an exceptional offer we should keep him. I don't consider £40mmin today's market exceptional
Even if he went on to become an incredible player, he wouldn't be worth that much more than £55m - and there is just as much chance he doesnt reach his potential too. To be worth much more than that in the future he would pretty much need to be the best player in his position in the world. Don't get me wrong, Saints should hold out and try for the £55m because there is a lot of interest and sometimes clubs do over pay. But purely in terms of value I'd say he is worth around £30m.
Rumours that Big Ange is getting sacked next week? Doubt if this would have an effect on them wanting Dibling?
Doubt it; signings are very club driven these days, with managers having little or no say. Not that I'm a huge fan of that, mind, but then I'm old school.
All this talk of Dibling to Spurs for anywhere 40-55m I don’t think he’s better than Brennan Johnson. I’ve not seen enough to be sure he will be.
I’m not saying we shouldn’t hold out and get as much money as possible, just that looking at it objectively £45m is probably a good deal for a teenager who’s had half a good season. I’m also not expecting the board to listen to me. Maybe we could forgoe the sell on clause for a really tall, promising young keeper?
The fee, whatever it turns out to be, will be peanuts anyway…. Even a £55 million deal on a 5 year contract is only £11 million a season… even to Spuds, that’s very do-able….
