Pretty sure it was McGeady and ‘the king’ who didn’t like 09. I was told they bullied him, I think it reflects more on them two tbh.
We sank very low. Brought about in part by Bobs mates. Thankfully we didn’t sink though, just took on a lot of water. The most embarrassing part of it all was when our first team had to play against Newcastle United’s under 21 side in a cup game.
I’d blocked that game from my memory, aye absolute rock bottom that, makes me appreciate the current set up so much more
That was embarrassing, he was so overrated by some - i didn't rate Mcgeady at all either tbh, felt his lack of pace and workrate as a massive issue for us O9 leaves a better legacy than both by far at the club, some of the players we had playing for us in L1 was just embarrassing, players never good enough to wear our shirt
I think Mcgeady was a bright light in a terrible time, wasn’t great in the championship mind but who was that year, don’t mind Mcgeady personally huge over reliance on him was probably a hindrance in hindsight we will talk about Luke the way we do Kevin Ball for decades can see him working at the club post playing career too, the other two will barely get a mention in 5 years
No doubt mcgeady had moments of magic, just felt the lack of pace killed us - he wouldn't cover the full back at all either. Was meant to be a nice lad though, I know a player who was in and around the 1at team at the time and he said mcgeady was class with him
Geads was class but way past it, remember watching him at Crewe away beat his man time and time again but did not have the legs to actually run past him. Won’t be listening even though I love the WTF pod had enough reminders of our worst ever seasons,I remember trying to get excited for signing Jordan Jones and being gutted we couldn’t sign Luke Garbutt because Blackpool outbid us……
He comes across well in interviews, seems like he takes no **** and genuinely wanted the best for us, just went through some highlights from the first year in league one and Jesus Christ I forgot how bad the standard was, like football in slow motion, ozturk and loovens, wow
100%, the guy i know tho said really positive things about him and McGeady took him under his wing and lolkwd after him Hasn't really helped his career like as the lad is playing semi pro now
The only thing I really remember about McGeady was the story he told about having a go at a player for not trying on a rainy away game. I think he knew how big a club we were.
I'd blanked that whole period out my mind until now. There was some absolute dross in those squads that got away with being ****e because the others were even worse. Oviedo got a massive free pass, was earning fortunes but was dogshit. Maguire was a bellend and there's a reason he played league 1 and lower most his career. The king ffs. Flanagan and Baldwin ffs. That game against Cov how we scored 3 I don't know. Power, Leadbitter etc grafters bit way past it/not good enough. I wish I hadn't looked at this thread tbh
Feel sorry that they get referenced repeatedly for that game. Truth is they were in an impossible position. Midfield was nonexistent and Oviedo gave one of the worst defensive performances I’ve ever seen, anywhere, at any level.
Wasmt the reason mcgesdy got dropped was that he called Phil Parkinson out on his negative mindset, not realising this is a big club. Or am I misremembering
Geeds was a professional playing with journeymen and players who were content picking up a wage. He became frustrated with players not giving a toss, as would I. Watch the video when they're all throwing snowballs as they were entering the training grounds, it speaks volumes. He did stick up for O'nien when Macguire was allegedly picking on him by saying "FFS, leave the kid alone"
Let’s not get it twisted. Maguire called himself The King. There was very little take up on it, I never heard any of my group call him that, not even after the odd big goal.
