The vote is now open for the naming of the new foot bridge with 3 options to choose from: Keel Crossing Wear Crossing Beacon Bridge Slightly underwhelmed if I’m honest but I’d go for Keel Crossing
I did put in a suggestion, Charles Duncan ONeal Bridge. Hecwas a resident of Sunderland, and as far as I can tell the only resident of the City to have the following Their face on the currency of their home country. The main highway named after them. The bridge in the capital city of their home country named after them. To be one of the ten official national hero’s of their home country.
Like the idea of naming it after someone local who did good for the city or was linked to it in some way. The only problem with that is not everyone would be happy. I would personally name it after William Herschel. Others might think that was not right and want to name it after Alf Wight. Others may want it named after Ernest Vaux. Like you I’m not enamoured with the suggestions put forward as they’re all rather bland, but Keel Crossing is the best of a bad lot I suppose.
