Dale Gordon and Andy Townsend scored for Norwich City as they beat West Ham United 2-1 at Carrow Road.

It was the first time a Norwich league game had been broadcast live on the television.

The two sides would meet later that season in a memorable FA Cup quarter-final tie - which the Canaries won 3-1 in a replay following a 0-0 draw at Upton Park.

City lost the semi-final to Everton at Villa Park but the result was overshadowed by the tragic events at Hillsborough in the other semi-final between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

Norwich City midfielder Gary Holt scored a rare goal as the Canaries thrashed Sheffield Wednesday 5-0 at Hillsborough.

City were 4-0 up at half-time with goals from Darren Kenton, Paul McVeigh and a brace from Danish striker David Nielsen.

Scottish international Holt was affectionately known as 'three lungs' by City supporters due to his athletic displays in the centre of midfield.

On Boxing day 1963 nine first division matches were played producing a grand total of sixtysix (66 goals. Some hapless team conceded ten of them. Now who could that be?

Following defeat in the FA Cup against Charlton Athletic, Norwich City manager Glenn Roeder was sacked.

Club chairman Roger Munby said: "We'd like to place on record our sincere gratitude and admiration for what Glenn and his staff achieved last season when they saved the club from relegation against the odds."

Norwich legend Bryan Gunn took over as manager in time for the next game against Barnsley which the Canaries won 4-0.

The season ended with Norwich being relegated to League One meaning they had slipped to third tier of English football for the first time since 1960.

    They were bleak times

On this day in 1958, 23 people - including eight players and three members of the club's staff - suffered fatal injuries in the Munich Air Disaster.

Roger Byrne (28), Eddie Colman (21), Mark Jones (24), David Pegg (22), Tommy Taylor (26), Geoff Bent (25), Liam Whelan (22) and Duncan Edwards (21) all lost their lives, along with club secretary Walter Crickmer, trainer Tom Curry and coach Bert Whalley.

Eight journalists died - Alf Clarke, Tom Jackson, Don Davies, George Fellows, Archie Ledbrook, Eric Thompson, Henry Rose, and Frank Swift, who was a former Manchester City player. Plane captain Ken Rayment perished, as did Sir Matt Busby's friend Willie Satinoff. Travel agent Bela Miklos and crew member Tom Cable also died.

And of course we played and beat them in Jan 1959 at the start of our famous Cup Run. So many ifs and buts around that.

Great memories. Cups were huge back then. Mick Shannon was a huge personality up front and Watson and Bruce arguably the best CB pairing we've ever had.

Watched the game on TV at home with my Nan after my grandfather had sadly passed away the year before, recorded it on a VHS tape, which I still have today. Shame those anfield supporters spolit it for us later on as we had qualified for Europe. However got my photo taken with Ken Brown & the Cup when they brought it back to Norwich

I was the proud holder of two seats in the truncated rows at the top of the stand behind the directors box, to the right of the press box. I looked down almost on the halfway line, the only restriction to the view being due to the roof of the stand, which meant losing sight of the ball if it were hoofed skyward. Seats in those rows were priced at the same rate as seats at either end of the stand, which made them a great bargain. The replacement seats I was offered in the South stand weren't a patch on the old ones and the match experience totally different. I cursed that fire!
