Sharing info, gambling on results. I've been in the dugout when a player shouted to the bench where the leader of the punters club was 'how many do we need' when deciding whether to take the 2 or play and go for a try knowing the margin on the handicap was tight.

Its a massive problem in rugby league. The players don't get paid enough and the temptation will always get to some, especially in the lower leagues.

It's not panicking it's balancing their liability. These markets would have tiny volumes on them so any bets will impact the market.

 

Leicester winning the title was the best year for the bookies. So many people bet on the big six they easily made money on that season. A friend who works/worked at paddy power at the time loved it.

There are players who gamble on results using inside knowledge still, yes. No idea if some are still acting on field to ensure they beat or lose against the handicaps. I reckon it happens in all Sports, some things are too easy to swing.
