Clifton - our immigration problems are not from hoards of skilled, educated French, Italian, German or Spanish coming over here taking our jobs and homes or begging for handouts.
It’s from people from further afield who arrive VIA Europe, but aren’t European themselves.
Leaving the EU hasn’t stopped it - because being in the EU was never the cause.

 

This is exactly correct.And most of those europeans returned home after a few years. Immigration has trebled since Brexit. Nearly all of it legal migration and people from further afield than europe. Thanks to the policies of Johnson and co.

 

It's not that straightforward. If you are based in the UK and work in Schengen zone countries those days come out of your 90 /180 entitlement. Restricting your ability to have vacations / visit friends or family. To work for more than 90 days in 180 you need to apply for a visa which means fiscal residency. Expensive and can be a slow process. You would then pay all your taxes in the country you are spending the 180 days in. And in the case of Spain you can only leave Spain for 10 months in the first 5 years, otherwise you lose your visa

THE EUROPEANSthat came here and worked for x period of time was pretty much balanced by those from here working there! this included doctors/ nurses/ medical ... and other service industries like defence/ engineering / IT etc

Which I noted. The overwhelming majority of immigrants are not skilled. And jobs on the skilled occupation list for visas are also seriously low waged. The Tories issued 140,000 social care visas as skilled workers, and allowed care workers families in their hundreds of thousands to come to live in the UK.

The UK does not have highly-selective, highly-skilled and highly-controlled immigration.

 

Could be worse nationalities/cultures though RP ?
At least the Poles and Eastern Europeans align with our own culture and beliefs, not polar opposites like some

 

True RP there is a large Polish community there and the lower part of town does feel like a foreign country. However I could show you parts of Spain where there are more Brits than Spanish.

 

Morning Angelic, it's all about numbers for me, not necessarily where these migrants come from.
They all need housing and the infrastructure that goes with it.

 

my wife worked in a care home until she retired ...biggest bane was reliability and language when they had to have cover! Over the years maybe mostly last 20 at least 7 people she knew that wanted a care job there because the "police reports" that they need [ there is a name for them ] took so long, they eventually after a month or so gave up and did other jobs. All eventually got the clearance when to late already in a job!
Problem was they had agency cover and all were non British spoke little English and had different outlooks 3 to my knowledge had only been in the country for less than 1 month / 3 month's / 4 month's. Most of the agency it seemed had their own rules as to how they should do the job and the turn over was quite big ...... at the time the care home was council, she moved to a private one because of it, and although retired still does a free day weekly ... and accompanies those less firm on trips etc.

 

The checks are enhanced DBS. The checks are now carried out in sensible period of a couple of weeks, this as you note did take months.

Good communication skills are essential in care, foreign staff not being able to communicate with service users, and cultural differences is something I am very familiar with. The health and care visa which brought huge numbers of foreign care workers into the UK actually did not bring the highly skilled into the Country because it was not skills based, no qualifications were needed and applicants needed to pass a very basic English test.

The health care visas was also used by large scale scams. Many supposed care workers are not support workers at all. The home office was scammed visas were issued to care homes that did not exist, agencies and services were issued hundreds, and in one case over a thousand visas and the organisations for staff that did not exist. One person with a visa could bring their family in, and this was utilised by tens of thousands. Many ceased to be care workers when they entered he UK. Abuse of the health and care visa has been widespread, a ruse for low/no skilled workers/non workers for to get into the UK with their families..

What I meant was it’s better to have Eastern Europeans rather than people from cultures who will abuse women and girls and who will want to see Sharia law as the norm

 

If its the development I think you are referring to I completely agree regarding the services provided locally including roads are insufficient. You may know they are also planning to build on the other side of the A367 as well. Not to mention the massive planned development joining on to Midsomer Norton near Tesco ( but comes under Ston Easton, so what was Mendip now Somerset ) with the planning permission awarded to a company linked to Rees Mogg no less

For such a small area it borders on madness.

 

I wasn't aware of that one, that whole area is getting so developed.

 

and thats happening big time elsewhere even bigger. places like melksham wilts have doubled in size. west wilts melksham trowbridge westbury is being built over so England a really densely populated country is going big time with unprecedented change!!! and will have to go faster to house what it has and we are bringing in huge numbers of immigrants. it is ****ing nuts.

 

Destroying land, poisoning rivers and streams with new builds and destroying wildlife habitats
Putting huge extra pressures on local councils, the NHS, schools and often in new developments, there is no infrastructure to support it all

Effing nuts is bang on and yet few politicians want to change course and avert what will surely be civil meltdown at some point
