Why are we probably the only team I know who don't have a long throw specialist? Sheffield's Robinson can hit the penalty spot from the half way line and is a real threat to our defence, yet I can't recall anyone in our team with any similar capabilities?
Suppose it all comes down to a long throw specialist actually being good enough to start for us I remember seeing Ben Tozer play a few years ago and he was shocking but seemed to start because his throws were class
I'd rather keep possession in a dangerous area and develop the attack further to be honest. Long throws take so much time, look at Coventry especially in the first leg, their fullback was travelling from side to side just for Ballard to head it clear.
My point is that this is a skill that anyone could develop with enough practice, it's totally unrelated to normal football skills and it undoubtedly gives teams an advantage when used. Maybe it's no coincidence that we are usually not very strong at most dead ball situations (apart from playoff semifinals)?
I think it’s pointless for us because it’s putting a high ball into the box - like corners - we NEVER score from corners. …. hang on , what was that the other night ??
Coventry had 986 long throws in the first leg and created absolutely nowt from any of them, I'd prefer a quick counter any day. All it does is put a high looping ball in to the box, if you have a couple of half decent CBs they will deal with these all day long
What annoys me about throw ins is that, when we get a throw, we never seem to have a free man, yet opponents always seem to!!
I remember we had a lad in the Roker Park days who had a good throw on him. Lawrence, winger? Can't remember the first name. Terry Butcher era maybe? Wasn't very good mind.
I actually thought that we did as well as that was the story being peddled back then. I just went onto Wiki and saw that we signed from a non league team.
He was in an open prison and was released on day release to play when he was playing non league. He had just been released on probation when he came here for a trial, I'm sure he made his debut coming on as a sub against boro
