I find that bizarre. Whatever your opinion of his ability as a manager, I don't see how Saints fans could dislike the bloke. He secured us a promotion which was crucial in terms of avoiding severe financial issues and gave us a fantastic season and day at Wembley in the process. He then failed in the PL with what is clearly the worst squad in the PL... pretty standard. He wasn't up to it in the PL but I hold nothing against him.
Yeah I'm the same to be honest; he gave us a fantastic season, a fantastic day out at Wembley and I thank him for that. Now the anger of earlier this season has subsidized a bit, I can only sit here, thank him and appreciate the job he did, and the feel good factor of last season that he led.
I'm staggered to think that any Championship club would look at Russell Martin for a management role. Can't imagine their supporters will be inspired by the appointment?
Really? He improved both seasons at Swansea and then got 87pts and won promotion with Saints after a quick rebuild
Bloke's a tit mate. Find him arrogant and he put his own interests above the club's despite taking a 7 figure salary. He hated any criticism as he sees himself and his 'principles' as above everyone else and this happened in the championship too. He's just some football mastermind who us mere mortals don't understand. Worst of the worst though was his gaslighting his fans that we were having fun and the blaming of fans for conceding a goal cos we cheered a long clearance. He showed absolutely no respect to the club and the fans this season which is unforgivable as far as I'm concerned. As for the promotion, going over old ground but I don't particularly rate that as a great achievement. He had to do it so fair play to him and he deserves credit for it but it's not like it was some brilliant job nobody else could have done. I'm almost certain we wouldn't have gone up if Bazunu hadn't got injured too so he got massively lucky there that his failure to adapt didn't cost him. Oh and two more words against him - Charly Alcaraz. ****ing fraud of a manger.
Speaking of Bazunu I wonder if he'll want to sign him? They can have him for a can of Fanta and a packet of monster munch.
I really hated the style of play that he introduced, so predictable and easy to play against,. We just about got away with it in the Championship but look what happened this season. Yes we got promotion and had a great day at Wembly but I wouldn't put that down to RM.
Haha, yeah just wrote similar on the other thread, and came here to see you've done the same. Just better. Plus, I hate Leicester.
The clubs interests are his interests. He has ended up back in the championship, at a club likely to start with a big deduction - hardly done a Kompany. Whereas if he kept us up he would be rated as one of the best English managers there is. He wanted results just as much as the fans. His comment on the fans cheering the clearance was stupid I'll admit. I'm not saying he is perfect and we should think of him like we do Adkins. But to have him anywhere near the most disliked manager is one I don't understand. My opinion is that he is probably a decent bloke that believes in his philosophy and way of doing things - rightly or wrongly.
Ours and his interests did collide though when he all but said he'd rather lose playing his way than compromise and not lose. Remember his "we're not here to grind out results" quote? Still find it incredible that a top flight manager who's bottom of the league said that publically tbh. He's probably my most disliked manager as I can't recall another one showing such blatant disrespect to the fanbase and worse trying to gaslight us into thinking we were loving it. But it is what it is and probably best we agree to disagree tbh. I'm sure we can all agree that we hope he signs Bazunu though!
Interestingly the fred on the Leicester forum seems to be overwhelmingly negative about this. A few even saying they'd rather stick with Van Nistelrooy (which I find a bit mental tbf). This is a belter too:
Interesting post on said fred Swans fan in peace. For our sakes I hope this is true. We've got our own ambitions to return to the Premier League and having one of our likely rivals for that managed by Russell Martin can only help our cause. For your sakes I hope it doesn't happen. He's easily the Swans manager I've loathed the most in his time at the club. An arrogant, stubborn, tactically idiotic buffoon with a complete inability to get the best out of the players at his disposal and total willingness to blame them when things go wrong. He may play some youth players but he will chuck them under the bus at the first opportunity if he can shift responsibility for failure from himself in the process. He's far from the nice guy his cheerleaders in the media enable him to portray himself as too.
He’s clearly capable with the right players in the Championship. But maybe pay him off once promoted…
