Graeme Bailey could tell me I support Sunderland and I’d have to double check

Whether we have a gentlemans agreement is hypothetical mind but I would disagree with the club if they have these kind of agreements when it comes to fees. Allowing leaving to certain clubs in certain positions I have no problem with but I wouldnt agree with the club having a policy where they agree certain fees with players for future years.

I agree with you if we have done it that it should be honoured, but Id disagree with having it in the first place.

Extreme example but say Mayenda signs a new deal this summer and we have a 'gentlemans agreement' that if a CL club comes next summer for £25m, we will sell. He then proceeds to score 20 goals in the prem and we stay up. Would be ridiculous to sell for that low in that instance. (I appreciate thats as unlikely scenario as it gets but just trying to explain why I would prefer us to stay away from promising certain things).

In this hypothetical it doesnt become a problem - its not a contractual clause that can be triggered and there would be clubs willing to pay much more, if theyre good enough to warrant higher fees we can still push the fees up, a friendly agreement with the player can still be altered depending on the level of interest.

Yeah, that's where I'm coming from. If the club insist on any fee related agreements, just have a release clause and keep everyone happy. They'll do right by Jobe for sure but got to do right by us too. I think they will.

Would rather he just stayed like haha.

Nah thats dangerous business like, i prefer how we do stuff now - just say we wont let you go for less than X amount but can try and push it as far as possible when discussing with other teams.
Decent fee for an english player could become pretty useful.

One thing I don't get with Jobe is people saying his parents don't want him in premier league. The lad is past the age of his parents doing more than advise him if he doesn't play in the premier league because anyone feels the times isn't right it's Jobe! His parents aren't making decisions for him anymore. Now he might put a load of emphasis on what they say but he has the final decision

Very savvy family. Keeping the agent's fees in house means they don't have to go overboard in looking for high wages - if and when Jobe moves.

Probably an unpopular opinion but even if we did go up and sold Jobe for £30m, that £30m would allow us to spend a fair bit more if we offset it with amortisation. He’s a good player but as of right now, ability wise, he’s nowhere near that of a £30m player imo. He’s not our talisman as such, nor have we built a team around him so he’d be very easily replaceable. Obviously he has the potential to be so much more but I’d put my mortgage on us being a better team next season if we sold him and signed a few shrewd additions.

He would also likely develop more next season playing in a team like Dortmund surrounded by a good mix of quality youth and experience who are already fairly decent and play a certain brand of football whereas there’s a good chance we’ll be scrapping every game and take some heavy losses. I think it would be a good move all round for player and club.

I’m very aware I sound like the pessimistic ****er from The Sunderland Story :emoticon-0102-bigsm

Massively agree tbh. Jobe has improved so much but I still don’t think he’s that good. He’ll be getting signed on potential.

Still should be an advisory role nothing not a decision making role. Jobe decides where, when and if he goes! Not saying he won't listen to the advice from his parents but he won't be letting them decide if he nownis the righ time for the Premier league for example.

For much of the season I’d argue that he’s been our most important player bar none. He’s dropped off a bit in the latter stages of our season but when we were genuinely challenging for autos he was consistently our best player every week.

Aye, that can’t be argued with. He’s certainly been a miss when unavailable

Don’t mind jobe leaving at that price as long we get a hefty sell on clause

Will be sad to see Jobe leave. Think he's been our best and most consistent player this season by quite a large margin. Would like the price to be higher if we were to go up but the sell on clause is the key here.

He was very good for 3/4 of the season like but I do think as Sunderland fans we always look at our players with a bit of bias as all fans do of their own players. Up until about Feb/March he was comfortably our best player. I was quite surprised by fans of others clubs reacting to him being named in the TOTS, there was a LOT of fans saying it’s undeserved and he’s been nowhere near as good as the media make out. I think he’s somewhere in the middle to be honest, he’s getting plaudits off the media because he’s a Bellingham but that name is also hindering the opinion of other fans who think he’s instantly overrated because of that. If he was as much of a standout as we think he is you’d think other fans would pick up on that considering how often we’ve been on TV this season. But we have the pleasure of watching him every week so we know how important he is.

He’s got a massive future ahead of him for sure and I’ve no doubt he’ll play at a very good level but for £30m in the position we’d be in if we went up I’d want someone who’s twice the player he is at the present moment. An elite club can afford to throw £30m away and forget about it while he takes his time there and we don’t have that luxury unfortunately. £30m would’ve got you both Milenkovic and Lacroix this season, with change, who are both very good established defenders.

Totally agree. He's not a game changer, yet. more a work horse. Given better training elsewhere he'll improve again
