Darwin wasn't an idiot... but he did get a lot of things wrong and have some crazy ideas. He was obviously right about evolution and quite brilliant in a lot of his thinking... but he was wrong about a lot of things geological. He thought Ice Ages were fake for example. He thought plants roots contained the ability to think like brains in animals.

Seeing the news about the prisons being full by November...

I don't know why we don't release the lowest non violent categories to home confinement with a tagging system, create one.

Also for the lowest categories that can't be referred to home, do quick build detention centres, sort of like an open prison basis. China manages to do it.

From what I see of sentencing in this country, there are people who are in prison who don't really need to be there, and some who should be in prison roaming around free.

Not blaming Labour for any of this btw, I just think we need a radical reform of our prisons more aligned to the modern world and its needs. Protestors don't need to be in prison (non violent, non aggressive) stick them on home arrest.

Do we really need to put people inside for cannabis, some countries have this legalised and taxed, that tax could help build new prisons. They are going to use it whether it's illegal or not. That's IF they put users in prison, might not.

I'm sure you guys could think of more stuff. Sucky's will probably be tax evasion. <whistle>

Some geezer was jailed for 6 months for illegally letting out his council flat in Greenwich. Can't see the point of jailing him ... a huge fine and community service is surely better

There's a lot in prisons who need to be in hospitals, mental illness isn't being treated sufficiently here, prison officers haven't the time to make sure the ones in need are taking their meds and when they don't, that's when it goes wrong.

A few years ago a bloke I know was on duty on nightshift and an inmate called him to his cell, when he opened the hatch, he couldn't see him, so shouted, are you OK mate, yeah I just need some pain killers, why what's wrong, then he appears in view with his ear in his hand that he'd just cut off, apparently no one would listen to him but perhaps they will now was his logic. The bloke reckons around 20% of inmates have mental issues that prisons can't help with

Yup agree with what you say.

I can't really speak for todays prisons so much, but can't believe it's much different from my younger years in life, when they locked you up for your own protection, then add the scenario you mention to that equation, you get the results you've highlighted. Although over-crowding of prisons has been the case for as long as I can remember. Even in my youth they were having to constantly up the numbers per cell.

The one thing that does come across as totally different and certainly under staffed is the probation service, and when that system is working well they would become the eyes and ears of any potentital problems brewing with individuals. Trouble is people look at it like punishment, it's not, completely the opposite or should be, it's someone to share your problems with and getting help to overcome day to day hurdles in life, get youn back on the right track.

Then when you take the good bits of all the above, the question comes that why do you have to become trouble to get help, why do people only listen when it's too late, your chap losing his ear. It will generally be because the structure of the system is ****ed in someway, example mental health facilities, availability, lack of the people qualified to help. A GP that knows their patients also help, but how often do you get to see a GP let alone your own GP these days. Replace all that with a prison cell as alternative therapy lol.

I use to see a top psychologist, you'd be lucky to find one these days, my GP also retired, I can guarantee that was more due to stress, again it's a break down in the chain of support, erosion of the system. I suppose we should be grateful we don't have places like Chartham anymore (nuthouse). Where they'd wire your brain up and deliver a few shocks to your system, instead these days it's so called care in the community and lots of stabby people running about among us.

The savings of austerity aren't savings, they just **** the system and actually cost it more money in the long run. Sticky plaster politics.

I could go on writing this **** forever sadly.

Take out all the addicts, alcoholics and people with mental health issues from prison, and there'd be hardly anyone left.
