It's a strange thing, but often for teams outside the traditional 'elite' of English football, even winning the FA Cup doesn't lead to better things. It didn't do much for Wigan, Portsmouth or even Leicester City (beyond being a great day out for their fans). Even when we won it in 1947, our best seasons in the 1st Division were already behind us. If Palarse win it, they win it. Eight days later we will have forgotten that, as a much more important game for our future will be kicking off. Would I rather we stay mired in League One if we could do a deal with the Devil so he makes sure City beat Palace? No.

I have to say I would rather Palace won it than Man City. I have a lot of banter with one of my neighbours who is a Palace season ticket holder as is a good friend of my wife. It has got to be better than the same old boring names being inscribed on it.

Four years before they won the FA Cup. Charlton had three back-to-back top 4 finishes in the 1st Division - 8 years before we won the FA Cup. Even becoming Champions of England in 2016 did not make Leicester one of the 'Elite' big Clubs overnight - or indeed at all. In 2023 down they went. It may be a strange thing to claim, but statistically I would say that if Palace lift the FA Cup this evening, they will be more likely to be relegated within 3 seasons, than if they don't. Following the likes of Wigan, Portsmouth and Leicester.
