I was thinking actually @PINKIE that there is one remarkable difference between the plane crash cannibals and the story you told, and that is drinking water - it was in the Andes so a region covered by snow, so a source of water. Where as in your story it was at sea, so would have caused problems, I believe in your story the difficulty would have been more the lack of fresh water then that of food, hence then the mind deteriorates even quicker and certainly a lot quicker than those in the Andes, who just as a conscious decision decided to take on cannibalism to survive. Whereas those in the boat probably went full on fruit loop to that route.
