I could very well see that being the sort of appointment he would go for. Could be another Rooney or a Lampard (this time). Nothing would surprise me, including him looking to use the fans reaction to all this as his excuse to get out.
Is Acun responsible for all the signings? Did he do the scouting, contract negotiations or was he just signing the cheques. If I remember right the transfer threads always end with the summary of what good business we have done. Unlucky with injuries to what may have been some better players, but they may have just as easily underperformed like some of the others did. Selles never seem to find his best team and was constantly swapping and changing. Arambat who many were calling for never really got a go until the end when he led by example and showed some fight and spirit which many others never did.
Your last sentence makes a whole lot of sense... He'll shoulder the blame for nothing and will cite the fans turning on him as the last straw.
Based on what Howden, ST and M88 have said, the club is in a bad way financially. Allegedly, some players like Alzate and Kamara were informed in March that they were to be transfer listed in the summer to raise funds due to cash flow problems and unsustainable losses. I doubt this can be verified but the late payment of wages, even by a few days, was reported as due to the money coming from overseas accounts and not a technical glitch. Players are having salaries paid from overseas accounts instead of the club’s account. That might be standard procedure at some clubs but it points to the club not having any contingency funds in a British-based account for the club to pay players. If that’s all true, then the performances falling off a cliff after the international break make sense. Lowered morale within the squad could put the head coach into a difficult situation and into a siege mentality. It’s actually a credit to Sellés he managed to grind out enough points and concede few goals to keep us up. Then the owner likely sacks him on account of poor performances after the international break. Call it conjecture or rumour or whatever you like. I don’t really give a ****. I trust Howden, ST and M88 and their sources a lot more than I do Acun right now. The players speak highly of Sellés and we should factor into how they feel about all of this. Senior players didn’t want Acun to sack Rosenior either. It’s a ****show and all the blame lies squarely at Acun’s door.
We need some local journalists willing to ask Acun difficult questions and grill him about the self-sabotage of the club, not blowing smoke up his arse. Say what you want about Burns but he wasn’t afraid of being blacklisted for asking difficult questions. Cooper and White need to grow a pair.
If others had played their games in hand in this table that everyone keeps referring to, it’s more likely we’d have been 17th. Obviously he’s kept us up, I didn’t need that clarifying
I guess it's as simple as that (and as JTT and TC point out). We had a very solid defense. We keep saying he didn't have the players, but, like Acun, Dublin and Hodge appear to have concluded, maybe we too should have expected more from what Selles did have available in terms of attacking play. Not meaning to win every game or anything ridiculous, but meaning more than we saw particularly in those last 8 games. Just looking again at who we did have for midfield and attack: Lincoln, Alzate, Puerta, Crooks, Slater, Palmer, Pedro, Joseph, Gelhardt, Amrabat, Kamara, Burstow, Vaughan There's some decent players in there for this level and there was plenty of options & cover. Surely they were collectively capable of more than we saw? Selles started off well enough (which maybe wasn't too hard, returning us to sensible football after Walter), but, as TC said, "he needed to find a way, but instead lost his way". 5 goals in the last 8, and some truly dire performances was unacceptable. We were so fortunate to stay up in the end. As said all along, on balance I'd have probably have stuck with him, but I can see why the decision has been reached. Also, we don't have the full picture of what goes on behind the scenes, what is said, who else they believe is available, etc. As others have said, who replaces him now is key - meaning, if it's a left field Arvaladze / Walter type then it's likely the end of Acun, if it's a sensible appointment we can get behind, and done quickly, then great, roll on next season.
