Just watched the bbc news at one and agree, Starmer seems to be confident he can tackle the problem that has plagued the tories these past 10 years
There is some devil in the detail of this immigration whitepaper, and some of it worrying imo. As a principal targeting legal immigration feels counter intuitive. Seems a rather isolationist approach. Net migration has been on the rise since the 90s and rose sharply under the last Labour govt. This is not a recent occurance caused by one vovt or another. The point is many of those coming under legal provision are invaluable to us and govts have known this. Now though it seems to be the biggest political cause there is. I think some of these choices proposed today present long term challenges all for short term political gain. One specific thing, that I selfishly share may well impact my own job security, is the approach to overseas students coming to university in England. They have doubled down on the conservative policies, making them even harsher. They want to lessen the numbers of students who come here. Are they really part of the immigration problem? Purely on economics they worth £20bn to our economy. Then the proposals are confused. They want less international students, but plan to place a levy (a tax in reality) on income earned from international student fees earned by each university. It is a bit mind bending and surely is not about immigration but about raising money. This in a university sector already at financial breaking point. 50% of universities are expected to be loss making by the end of this year. Lots are cutting costs and shedding staff, because the drop in international students numbers thanks in part to tory policy is already landing. Add to this the demographics in this country mean in 3 years time there will be less UK young folk of university age. Everything adds up to universities facing closure in my opinion. Is that a cost worth paying to bring immigration figures down? Imagine the economic impact of losing some of the city universities? Would be catastrophic for the city involved. It seems to me students and care workers are easy targets. So yes I think Labour will reduce legal migration. Is it for the greater good though? Not at all sure personally.
Had a few sherbets but sounds like a plan to put effort into reducing intelligent people getting qualifications and going on to well paid tax paying jobs , whilst effort gets reduced in stopping uneducated ( possibly criminal ) people at best doing menial low paid jobs , at worst not working at all ?? This country !
Picking on easy targets to get the numbers down. Hope you aren’t planning on going to the Lakes for a holiday 70% of workers in the tourist industry are LEGAL immigrants. What a two faced tosser the man is.
I believe the message is something to do with our people needing to work... now for a catchy slogan Back to work Britain It's going to hurt, there will be unrest... So what. We need a reset. It's coming.

It's a voluntary scheme for pension providers to invest in UK firms FFS. In what way are they 'rifling' your pension?
UK EU summit taking place in London today. EU have confirmed Fishing deal has been agreed and talks to continue throughout the day. Well done for getting some deals after Brexit.
Sounds promising so far from the soundbites... Starmer saying this will bring down bills. 12 year Fishing Agreement reached. Portugal PM saying we are reconnected with a purpose. Ursula von der Leyen saying developing road map looking at defence, economics and people to people... eGate speeding up entry into Spain and other countries who want to agree.
I can't stand Starmer, but it looks like he is doing alright as far as arranging decent deals with Europe is concerned . . . . that the Cons could/should, perhaps, have organised previously with the right people The trade-off for the deal apparently agreed this morning, was fishing access and rights for an additional 12 years, which is more than the UK had offered, and is likely to lead to cries of betrayal from the industry, though.
Deal with EU will make food cheaper and add £9bn to UK economy, says No 10 https://www.theguardian.com/world/2...economy-says-no-10?CMP=Share_AndroidApp_Other
It’s almost like the majority that voted for Brexit knew that it would benefit us, if it was managed correctly. Which, finally, this Labour government seem to be doing. Just in time for Independence Day, next month. Nice one, Two Tier
No gain without pain. I rarely watch Question Time, but last week there was a business leader saying Labour were on the right course. There will be those upset and suffering, labour will get somethings wrong, but, for the good of our economy, we will have to go through this pain until we turn things around from the disaster we have had to endure from the tories.
