It is not as simple as ' he would have to see that ' To players it is a job with a short career span and they also have wives and families to consider. If,say, Everton came in the a take it or leave it offer of £15m, and no other Club had shown interest, and were prepared to triple his wages on a 4 year contract then good luck on trying to convince him that you are turning it down.
Care to expand? Assume you're coming from the cost and other interest angle? If interested, he'd certainly be a 'coup' signing for the club, could always make a Buendia style agreement to sell on to a higher club in a couple of years time. Think we may be disappointed in Reyes, certainly looked like Thumper in the headlights in a couple of appearances; how much of that can be attributed to Police Academy style defending in-front can be debated but don't think he's got enough to take us up
£25 million, you're having a laugh! He's nowhere near that price tag. Extra £5 million gets Delap. He doesn't have to understand that. He'd see it as us blocking his possible final chance to prove himself in the EPL (irrespective of if he's consistent / composed enough). hypothetically, he could refuse to play to force a move through, then what? We've lost both ££ & player
In a World Cup year I don’t think he would refuse to play. He has a contract that he agreed to, I’d expect an open conversation with him and his representatives about the figure that we would be willing to accept. He can try to be difficult but I don’t think that’s in his character. He’s demonstrated that he can be a consistent goalscorer over 4 years now - that’s hard to come by. We got £11m for Idah and he’s half the player, Delap would have had that minimum release clause to make it easier for him to move should Ipswich be relegated . It is probably below his market value but Ipswich recoup what they’ve spent and make a profit. We would probably settle for £20m with some achievable add ons
The most direct comparison we have between Delap and Sargent is last season, both were playing in promotion chasing sides. Delap scored 8 goals in 31 games Sargent scored 16 goals in 28 games
And in his season in the EPL Sargent scored 2 goals in 26 games - something relevant to any interested EPL Club.
True but that was 4 years ago and he played as a RW the vast majority of that season and was new to the English game. I was a comparing a very recent season where they were both in the same league playing the same teams each week in relatively equal performing sides.
Sainz looks all but confirmed to be on the move, his barber has posted a farewell to him wishing him good luck on his new adventures…so he is either leaving the club…or he’s got a new barber
I agree that Sargent is a better and more complete player than Delap IMO That doesn’t mean he will be pricier or more successful, but I know which one I would rather have as a Premier League club
Apparently we've made a bid for Swindon's 18 year old Iraqi striker Botan Ameen: https://the72.co.uk/2025/05/07/norwich-city-pursuing-swindon-town-prodigy-botan-ameen/
And apparently we have submitted a £100k bid for Fleetwoods Reece Wilkes. An England youth international attacking midfielder is 16 years old so one for the future potentially
Looks like Jacob Wright could soon be signed on a permanent deal: "Ben Knapper is confident that Jacob Wright will become a permanent Norwich City player in the coming weeks. The Canaries hold a £2.3m option plus add-ons to convert his loan spell from Manchester City into a permanent deal and are understood to have informed the six-time Premier League champions of their intention to activate it. With all parties willing to complete a deal, Norwich are confident of getting it over the line to parade Wright as one of their first deals ahead of the 2025/26 Championship campaign. "Yes," Knapper said on the hopes of completing a permanent deal. "He’s been fantastic. He's grown continually since he's been here. But I think the thing I would say about Jacob as well is it's what he brings day to day, and generally and even at the games. You would have heard him on the pitch. We're talking here about a young man who is at the very start of his journey, but you would never think that from the way that he carries himself, the way that he approaches his work, day to day. He's got huge leadership potential. We're in a really good place with that. So I hope to have some news for you on that in the not too distant future." And there's also news on Dobbin: "Norwich are also considering whether to strike a deal to bring Aston Villa winger Lewis Dobbin back to the club next season. The Canaries have first refusal on a season-long loan deal for the 22-year-old, who made a positive impact at Carrow Road after a January move before a calf injury ended his season prematurely. "Possibly. It's something that we're looking at," he said. "There have been conversations. It's still on-going. So TBC which way that falls, but it's definitely something that we're looking at. He's a player that, again, made a good impact here, came in and really slotted well into our environment, and I think was producing some really good, consistent performances that helped us a lot. He's a player that we really like, and let's see how it develops." https://www.pinkun.com/sport/interviews/25153866.ben-knapper-wright-deal-dobbin-return-experience/
Yes please. Impressed with both these two. If somehow we do keep hold of Sainz I still think Dobbin will give him serious competition.
Knapper on Wright? That fits really well with the idea that Thorup failed when it came to player improvement -- which Knapper cited as one of reasons for sacking him. And it isn't just Wright. Doyle, Fisher, Crnac, Chrisene, Mahovo, Dobbin and Forsyth are all on record as having benefited from Thorup's and Riddersholm's often one-to-one coaching.
