If that's the case, you might as well support a top club that is winning the highest honours. What's the point of supporting Sunderland purely for 'entertainment' may as well get some better entertainment higher up?
In that case would should just withdraw from the play offs then, what’s the point, who’s to say we can’t go up nail the recruitment and have a relatively good season? Or shall we just stay here cos we can do the double over Derby
I'd get more entertainment from the anticipation of a PL season and a 1-1 draw on opening day against Brighton than I would from a 1-0 win at home to Portsmouth in the Championship.
Fair enough mate, I get more entertainment from a 4-0 win against Cardiff than I do a 4-0 defeat from Liverpool.
But how much did you get from the day we beat Chelsea 3-0? And the consecutive derby wins? And I know we might not ever get them again. But we also might lose to Cardiff 4-0
But what is the point of that 4-0 win if the end goal isn't promotion? May as well leave the league and become the football version of the Harlem Globetrotters playing exhibition games.
The Championship isn't even that good. It's fun to watch as a neutral but as a fan it's not great. Kick off times are already just as bad as the PL, the money disparity because of parachute payments is arguably just as bad as the PL, you have no choice but to sell your better players, look at the Watson transfer he's one of our biggest academy prospects in recent years yet we got maybe 4 good games from him and he's gone, VAR will 100% be in the Championship in the next few years.
I said 'ALSO' entertainment. I'm on both sides of the fence on this one personally. Which is probably one of the reasons that, for me, supporting Sunderland doesnt pack the punch that it used to. I no longer have the sleepless nights, knots in my stomach etc. The lows dont seem as low and the highs dont seem as high. I blame the modern game, I just dont like what its turned into, and if it wasnt for SAFC still having a slight hold on me I would have turned my back on it around 15 years ago. I mean, a few seasons back, how many times did you see people on this site and others say something like 'Luton getting promoted to the Premier League? Good for them.......but I couldnt watch them play every week!' If you werent getting entertained, why would you pay money to watch?
Except it probably won’t be a 1-1 draw against Brighton, think of a team that’s going to finish in the bottom 6 and then you might be more accurate.
There's no right or wrong in this. You'd get some supporters who just couldnt bear turning up every other week just to watch their team getting humped. But then some supporters would jump at the chance in witnessing and being entertained by some of the best players in the world turning up at the SOL, despite them constantly giving us a footballing lesson.
Because you get a truck load of money, facilities improve, get more sellable assets to set you up for the future, get to watch players who would 100% leave if we don't go up this year (Jobe for example). Play your cards right, which I trust KLD and KS to do and the club is in a better position despite relegation. Luton have been double relegated but the club is in a better position than it was 10 years ago and that's the whole point.
There's definitely a right and wrong in this. What is the point in staying down? And don't say winning games because what on earth is the point in winning games that mean nothing?
But you don’t know winning games isn’t going to take you up until the end of the season when you don’t make it, if we don’t manage it this season why did you go to the matches?
Being a fan is about hopes and dreams for your club. Whether that's a promotion, a trophy, European football, surviving relegation, winning a playoff final at Wembley and more. You take that away and it becomes nothing. I watch pre season games but there's no excitement, no drama, no big moments that change the course of your club for the next 5+ years. That's what not wanting promotion is, nothing.
