It's strange that there are so many good reasons against brexit, which only came to light after the fact but were never mentioned by remain before the vote.

Point of order, 'The title for a regional mayor in a Mayoral Combined Authority (MCA) is generally "Mayor" followed by the name of the region. For instance, the regional mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire would be referred to as the "Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire". This is also reflected in the Hull City Council's website, which explicitly mentions the upcoming election for the "Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire". The newly elected mayor will lead the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority and have significant powers over areas like skills, transport, and economic development, according to the Institute for Government'...

This is a belief which a lot of the folk eligible to vote for the Mayor of Hull and East Yorkshire will no doubt hold.

I pass no comment on it.

However, I find it bizarre that anyone would let that belief influence who they vote for in the Mayoral election in Hull and East Riding - a position that holds absolutely zero influence over whether small boats can be stopped or not.

This essentially illustrates what is wrong with the position of any Mayor being a party political one. Why would it influence anyone's vote? The Mayor has **** all control over the borders.

I'm in favour of metropolitan mayors, we have to keep up with the rest of the North and we see the other Northern mayors regularly banging the drum for their regions, particularly Manchester. So the last thing I wanted was a dilemma, vote party or personality? I like Mike Ross and think he'll make a good mayor but I don't like the LD's or their buffoon of a leader or the way their initial leaflets refused to recognise Reform as a threat. I like Luke Campbell but recognise he's inexperienced, but I'm drawn to protest vote. I saw Luke campaigning in Hessle on Monday and shook his hand, he has my vote and needs it to beat the tactical voting that has swung against him, if he wins he has a lot to learn but he's enthusiastic.

It’s making labour do things or threatening to do things Ernie
I’m trying to find an article from a week or so ago in the guardian
Yvette cooper is considering not allowing any asylum seekers refugees whatever you want to call them who have a criminal record for murder or rape to be allowed to apply for asylum!! wtf
Why would we ever allow anyone like that to stay in our country ??
The article was critical of her for considering it as the Grauniad thought it was allowing reform to pressure her!!

Probably not relevant to the thread, but I got a Facebook ban for saying to someone “I bet you vote reform”

The reason it gave me was hate speech and bullying is against their community guidelines.

    I found that pretty amusing.

I guess because the major parties adopt the Green policies that voters support - plastic bag costs, recycling, reduction of fossil fuel etc. and this leaves behind the lunatic left fringe who are aligned with the European green parties and support the policies that the general public in the main don't support.

Reform in their previous guise certainly influenced Brexit, but they've had f-all impact on immigration to the UK, despite both major parties promising to reduce it, as the figures show, hence why many of the general public will be voting for them now.

So we inspect the policies when it's the greens, and judge them on that basis? Fair enough.

Doesn't seem to be the same for Reform or their previous guises though. That party seems to be popular with some people purely on the basis of framing itself as the anti-establishment party for people who just want something different, and people are happy to not worry about their policies or interests, or the characters involved, or who they're tied to.

It's important that the ruling political party is held to account; by opposition parties on a daily basis, a robust media and by the electorate when they have an opportunity to do so. (just look across The Pond to see what happens when that starts to be dismantled).

Protest votes are a democratic right of any individual, as is a tactical vote to counteract a protest vote so the outcome of the Mayoral vote will be interesting.

If people vote for Luke Campbell in order to make a point about the Labour administration's hapless first year in power then that's one thing - but if they expect a decrease in small boat crossings as a result, they're going to be sadly disappointed.

My main gripe here though is that I think Mayors per se, Lord, Regional, Local or ones in pantomimes are a needless and ineffectual layer of bureaucracy, which cost and waste a shed load of money and achieve **** all.

Because most UK politicians (of both remain and leave) only had a superficial knowledge of the commercial, economic and political intricacies of the EU relationship. Brexit has shown that many UK politicians of all parties weren't qualified for their jobs and hadn't taken the time to learn what they should have known. Also that they had been happy for the media blaming the EU for decades, because it removed their responsibility.

Saw the young kid from the Yorkshire party on some news yesterday, spoke well and could string a sentence together. Vastly different was some older woman the other day who seemed to have a vocabulary made up of two words, uhm and ah.
