A lovely man according to my uncle who knew him …

… from what I’ve saw of him he's a player who’d make it in modern football.

    Rest in peace.

Sad news indeed. Cec was in the first team I ever saw at Roker Park, along with the likes of Joe Baker and Gordon Harris. RIP in SAFC Heaven.

So sad, I used to see Ces regularly on the golf course at Newbiggin or walking his dog around the village.
RIP Ces my thoughts and prayers are with you, your family and your friends

Never saw him play (first match was 1974), although I’m sure my grandad would have.
He lived the dream we all had of playing for Sunderland and lived that dream well.
    RIP Mr Irwin.

I recall once he was charging up the right flank and he over ran the ball, was quite funny.

I remember Cec charging up the right flank and launching one towards the Roker end goal, flew into the top left corner with a bit of whirlwind assistance.
I think that was his only goal for us. RIP Cecil.

I remember him doing a Rabona before they were even a thing. During the pre-match warm up, in front of the Fulwell end, he did a Rabona from the right touch line and it flew into the goal past Monty. The rest of the team congratulated him like it was a real goal and took the piss out of Monty.
