How is this sinking low???? it wasn't me who booed the man and got the chairman to sack him!! I respect SBR for what he did and who he was..The man was a gentleman a footballing statesman who managed to cross the divide and be be respected in all quarters of the north east. I don't chant anything at matches..I tend to watch to game. But I guess the Newcastle fans with selective memories who now revere SBR and worship his memory might just think about thier part in breaking his heart by booing him at his his beloved club. No amount of switching it around to me trying to hit me with a guilt trip will disguise the disgusting behaviour of a section of your supporters to the man.

As For MoN, I think an earlier poster mentioned, he will probably be more like our Brian Clough more than a SBR. But these are early days, lets see where it goes.

Martin O'Neill is his own man. He neither courts similarity to others, nor does he I'd imagine actually want it.

He doesn't come with the usual football cliches (Bruce was full of them tbh) and was especially at his press conference, the epitomy of cool. If If were a car, Mon would definately be on the book board of top gear.

Hopefully, at the end of his time with us, other clubs fans will be saying will their manager be the new Martin O Neill.

Just me mis-read this then and thought the OP was saying in the future we will be talking about MON with as much affection as went to Robson and Clough then?

TBH that's as big a compliment to the fans of Sunderland indeed the North East as a whole as it is to Sir Bobby.
And the main reason the press got it so wrong about Bruce's sacking.

    O
Let's get this right mate, he had us challenging for champions league spots and even the title one year. To suggest he achieved only top 6 finishing positions is a little bit of an insult to what he achieved with us in my opinion.

For somebody who is always right, you sure don't appear to be able to understand English very well. Specifically, where did I say that Sir Bobby only managed a top 6 finish?

Here is my quote regarding Sir Bobby and Newcastle.

"It is indicative of Newcastle that they would sack such a legend of the game bearing in mind that Sir Bobby had managed to guide Newcastle toward a very healthy league position with remarkable consistency."

I think you may have got your wires a little crossed... Newcastle were lying 6th in the league "during" the season when the fans of your club jeered the great man himself.

I also went on to state that the league is stronger now than it has ever been and if Martin O'Neill manages to guide Sunderland to a consistent 6-7th position then he will be a thought of as one of Sunderlands all time greats.

If your trying to find people who are an insult to Sir Bobby, I think you ought to take a look at the fans who jeered him at his own club as opposed to a Sunderland fan who makes reference to the great man by his correct title.

yes Bobby was born in sacriston co Durham.........when i was a wee boy if you were born in co Durham..... you supported sunderland (especially if from south durham)......we talk different... we are different to the more northern species of homo magusapien.......and we support Sunderland its in the blood.............Bobby was a child of the thirties and at that time sunderland were far superior to newcastle.....so yes his support for the dark side is all the more unusual.

There was a great cameraderie in the Newcastle camp under SBR reign and one that was undoubtedly fueled with alcohol, do you think, for instance, SAF would allow his players to frequent the city's nightclubs the night before a game?

I respect SBR enormously and he did terrific things at several clubs, including NUFC. I think he may have lost sight of the teams discipline and general professionalism in the latter years at Newcastle.

Your original quote came across as slur on the good people of Co. Durham, that was all.

Post the whole response leazes - the lad agrees with you FFS

Also - Bobby Robson supported NORTH EAST football - not just Newcastle - He attended tSJP and the SoL on a regular basis and supported the home team at both grounds.

I agree with the Sentiments of the OP BTW but I cannot compare Martin O'Neill to Sir Bobby Robson - SBR is light years ahead IMO - hopefully some day though

That, in my own clumsy way is what I was trying to get at.
MON is obviously not on a par with Sir Bob, he's done nowt for us yet. The potential is there though.

    Read your post again.

Taking the original question into correct context... Yes, I'm sure Taking the original question into correct context... Yes, I'm sure Martin O'Neill can be Sunderland's Bobby Robson as Martin O'Neill has all of the qualities and attributes to guide our great club toward the top 6, which is the same feat achieved by Sir Bobby at Newcastle.

Ofcourse, the premier league is far tougher than it was in the times when Sir Bobby achieved a consistent top 6 finish with Newcastle

Those are your words mate, not mine. And as for booing him, you were probably one of the idiots who sang those sick songs about him once he died. Oh yes, a faction of your fans did. Try and deny it.

<doh> to those who think MoN can achieve what SBR did at Newcastle.

You are seriously thinking CL football?

Come on lads. MON runs away when he doesn't get his own way. Anyone who uses his scottish record is an uneducated football fan. SBR won trophies everywhere he went except NUFC, however his time spent at us was good enough for me. CL football, Semi final in the Uefa Cup. MoN will not achieve that with you. Simple.

That quote is in the context of the previous paragraph...

Hypothetically speaking, if Newcastle had finished 6th in the league during the season when the fans of your club jeered Sir Bobby himself, you would have achieved a consistent top 6 finish... 11th, 4th, 3rd, 5th and then 6th, IF he had finished 6th at the end of the season... Assuming your fans had let him get on with the great work he was performing and ended the season in 6th position... the position you were when Sir Bobby was accused of "Losing the plot". We all know what happened after that... the whole country saw you appoint Big Sam and meander from one manager to the next until you were relegated to the championship.

In context of the previous paragraph, I highlighted that this wasn't considered good enough for your fans as they had developed the delusions of grandeur which were founded upon a couple of seasons in the champions league. Your fans for whatever reason thought that you were automatically entitled to a champions league position based on a couple of appearances and thus decided to hound Sir Bobby out of the club. That is the context of that quote. No disrespect to Sir Bobby in any shape or form.

As far as singing sick songs... I'm not ashamed to say that I have no idea what songs you are referring to and please, I urge you not to enlighten myself to whatever they are because I don't wish to know.

Sir Bobby Robson was a great man, the consumate gentleman and a world class manager. If those words arn't clear enough for yourself, then I'm afraid I'm unable to post any words that could releieve you of your false beliefs.

I'm sure there are many on here that would enlighten you if you wish to be told.

As for Bobby losing the plot. This all stemmed from Keiron Dyer refusing to play on the wing in our first game of the season at Middlesbrough, Craig Bellamy also refused to play on the left to allow Shola Ameobi to play upfront with Shearer. Robson gave in and allowed them to play in their correct positions.

I am not going to deny there were some people who wanted him out, I was 13 when Robson got sacked, I had had my ST for 3 years, hadn't a clue what was going on at the time in terms of sackings etc...

Our deluded chairman and a minority, a very small minority won, and ruined our club.

Aint that always the case, generations of good and not so good people build a club and give it life then a few come along and **** it up. The good thing is that in the end the many win and success comes, who would have guessed 12 months ago when Pardew walked in that he would be the one?
