I can't help but feel fans wouldn't even be entertaining Rohl as an option if he wasn't here before under Ralph... Wouldn't be my personal 1st choice if I was the decision maker
You’re probably right, seem to recall a lot of our fans turning their noses up at Corberan when he was suggested and he’s done more in his career so far, and now doing well at Valencia
Yeah, he's not my no.1 choice either. I wouldn't be bothered if we didn't get him. But at the end of the day, the decision is the club's. And if he's the club's no.1 choice, then I hope they're being as proactive as possible to get him.
That's got nothing to do with it for me. He's an extremely bright coach, he's flexible with his tactics. He's done a pretty miraculous job at Sheffield Wednesday given their crackpot owner. It's not surprising the results have fallen off a cliff since that ridiculous fans forum in January and the players not getting paid. He's also picked up valuable experience working with some top managers as an assistant manager.
He was by far and away my first choice before Juric but, given the situation then, there was no chance we would get him. Unfortunately he has gone to Valencia because if he was at West Brom still he would’ve been my first choice by miles again
But was has Rohl actually achieved? Whilst his style might be different to RM, that's where it ends. He's another manager who's greatest achievement is leading a team to Championship mediocrity. The job is way too big for a man of his limited experience. He's a SR cheap and clever option. It's like groundhog day with these pricks. Oh well 2 seasons until we're rid of them
Don't really agree. As a general rule, while in the EFL at least, I'd prefer to identify and try to sign a younger manager on the way up, who is overachieving with his current circumstances (Rohl, Martin, Adkins) than an older manager who hasn't done much lately but did do something at some point in the past (Pardew) in the hope they might do it again. I'd still really like us to go for Steve Cooper but there we are
Tbf I don't think he is going to be that cheap an option. Whilst some of his staff are out of contract, it isn't going to make much difference. I do agree with your first point though. He has done a good job with Wednesay, but nothing incredible. He doesn't convince me tbh, I am desperate to hear we have made an approach for Cooper.
Speaking of Rohl, some interesting comments after today's game: https://www.thestar.co.uk/sport/foo...-sheffield-wednesday-relegation-scrap-5090783
Yeah Cooper for me, as well. SR could start to try and win back some respect from the fans if they just tried to stop being so ****ing clever all the time. To make the shortlist he needs to hit the following points for me: -Championship experience -Premier league experience -Pragmatic -Does NOT have a philosophy -Plays players in their actual positions I don't think that's a lot to ask. Unfortunately for us to make the SR shortlist he must be; -Cheap -Potential growth to sell on to another club -Will pick their favourite players -Absolutely 100% wedded to a philosophy -Will play the same way regardless of opposition -Will never criticise the owners -Will fully believe he can turn ****e dross players into something desirable for other clubs.
Obviously we have no say in who the next manager will be, but I am nevertheless pleased to see Cooper's name being suggested more frequently amongst us fans in recent times. I had been concerned that if we were to appoint him, a common view might have been that we were making a "boring" appointment. But the support he's getting I think shows that he would be happily accepted. The next step, as Ronnie alludes to, is to hear of some concrete rumours actually linking us to him.
Röhl has four of the top five though. The only thing he's lacking is PL experience, and you can't get that until you've had a pop at the PL of course. Russell Martin only had one of the top five... (For what it's worth, I'd be perfectly happy with Cooper. It just wouldn't excite me quite as much. But then, I am an idiot).
