Not quite Phil … Real Madrid great Luka Modric is set to become a new minority owner of Swansea City. The Croatian, who turns 40 in September, is taking a non-controlling stake in the Welsh club. Modric’s purchase of the shareholding will not impact his career on the pitch, where he continues to star for Real. He is out of contract with Loc Blancos this summer but is keen to retire with Real and may extend his stay at the Bernabeu for a further year if it can be agreed. It comes as a surprise that he has decided to buy a minority stake in Swansea, who sit 12th in the Championship.
If he can influence some of his Croatian team mates to come to sunny Swansea and borrow some talented youngsters from Real Madrid’s development squad ….
Either way, imagine being a Cardiff fan this afternoon, staring League One in the face and the Jacks having Modric as a new investor ….
Swansea City is delighted to announce that Ballon D’or winner Luka Modrić has joined the club as an investor and co-owner. Luka is the most decorated player in Real Madrid history, winning six Champions Leagues, six Club World Cups, five European Super Cups, four La Liga titles, two Spanish Cups, and five Spanish Super Cups. He has also won the The Best FIFA Men’s Player award, The Ballon D’or, and played in the 2018 World Cup Final. He is Croatia’s most capped player of all time and, at the age of 39, has made 45 appearances for Real Madrid already this season, scoring four goals. Luka’s investment in the club is an endorsement of the club’s ambition and vision. He will play a key role in helping the club garner global attention and progress both on and off the pitch.
The bit I like when I read that this morning was "He will play a key role in helping the club garner global attention and progress both on and off the pitch."......
This can’t be a bad thing surely ? Modric is respected as a footballer globally. I would hope that he would be able to provide some positive influence to the players at least. As already mentioned, maybe he could help steer a few players our way. Let’s see what happens……
I saw the thread title and immediately thought it was a late April's fool But it's not, apparently Wow, things just might be getting serious But please let this be a long term commitment. Champions League here we come
What I hope first, is that he will bring a football brain to the boardroom!! We have been lacking in that department since the Yanks took over.......
That’s a tad harsh on Huw who remained on the Board after the Yanks took over, even masterminding the purchase of Sam Clucas …. oh, hang on, I see what you mean
