Unfortunately, the whole football 'thing/ is now becoming boring to me , Maybe its because Im a boring old fart, which I accept, but VAR, Play acting, Abusing officials for little or no reason, carry on to try and obtain ticket for away matches, non saturday games, lack of atmosphere, introduction of 2nd rate competitions doesnt help either I live in the past and just dont find todays matchdays experiences enjoyable as I did in70s and 80s. I cannot get a hard on anymore!!
Gary Neville makes a great point here about why football has became so boring. Skip to 40:30 if it hasn’t linked with timestamp.
stop the play-acting, use VAR to check how much contact was actually made (ie: was that really enough to cause the player to scream like he has just had his leg taken off with a rusty haddock?), defender gets himself in trouble so turns toward his own goal and causes contact (by stopping suddenly) and throws himself to the floor...there are many others not helped by the commentators remarks such as 'if there is contact, it's a foul' and 'he used his experience there'. football has become a pure 'stat based' game, clubs want good stats, players want good stats and agents want good stats because good stats equal higher transfer moneyand that is why i feel the 'eye test' is the important one. i always liken the game to snooker of old, when colour television came along snooker became a popular choice with plenty of colour that obviously never transfered well with black and white, it became a guaranteed ratings magnet and people appreciated the superb safety work of the older pro's and looked forward to the 'mavericks' such as the whirlwind and hurricane...then came steve davis, with his 'dont go for a shot unless certain' game which to be fair was very effective for him, unfortunately we lost the superb safe play and mavericks (and the viewers), football and sport in general need those mavericks yet they rarely make it to the top leagues because those damn stats are not good enough...
He's absolutely spot on. Remember when we played free flowing football, with no fear of bombing forward and taking on defenders?
