It does have to be said it's a more common tactic in Spain, while Edin Terzic used a similar system at Dortmund Just not at the expense at overlapping FBs
Poch won the double with psg, very much par for the course but it wasnt an overachievement but still very much above average. Then he took over my basketcase of the club which finished 12th and took us to 6th and a final. His methods were finally coming through as we finished with 7w, 3d and 1 loss. I think poch is still very special
Because they tend to join clubs were overperforming is basically impossible. Pochettino won the double with PSG and didn't overperform, judging by your comment. I don't necessarily disagree, but how can anyone fulfil your standard if that's the case?
Guardiola? He did it when it suited his fullbacks, though. Cancelo, Zinchenko and various centre-halves who are comfortable on the ball. He also had the luxury of having massive squads full of very talented players throughout. Postecoglou has done it when it suits neither our fullbacks nor our wingers. We don't have the depth and our players are better in traditional roles for their positions. Son and Johnson are goalscorers when central. Porro is an excellent crosser. Having the former go wide while the latter cuts in makes no sense.
The thing is we have the players to do it down the right, as Porro was underlapping under Conte as well while Odobert is better for staying out wide - but there's no way of making it work down our left flank There would be a solution if it was possible to set us up to be asymmetrical, so on one flank Porro cuts in while Odobert stays wide while on the other Son cuts in while Udogie stays wide, though the obvious issues are we'd need players who do the opposite on the bench if we're looking to overload - and the biggest issue is opposition coaches would surely figure out how to deal with that setup within 20-25 games
My point is that a few over-performers might exist but it is almost impossible to tell who they are in advance. That's why I don't much care who our coach is as it is very likely he (or she) won't make much difference in practice. It's not uncommon for a similar situation to exist elsewhere in life. Trying to choose an investment manager based on past performance is also close to impossible.
Guardiola quote: Sometimes my fullbacks go inside, but they [Spurs] go to the pockets as attacking midfielders, I never used that.
Shoe-horning Maddison into a deeper (and wider) position so that full-backs can operate as pseudo-10s instead of him is also complete pish.
Not if you slavishly support a bloke who continually appoints a bunch of ill-suited chumps and has to sack them like clockwork.
Of course a good manager alone won’t solve all issues but the right man can polish the turd a bit at least.
It's a relatively minor difference, but Cancelo was used as a midfield playmaker. He discussed it with Sky. The goal clip in the article is a decent demonstration: https://www.skysports.com/football/...rned-midfielder-under-pep-guardiola-explained
Will be surprised to see Ange in the dugout on Sunday tbh...turning on the away fans only ends up going one way
There's very little point in sacking him before the end of the season now. He might get the boot if we do disastrously in Europe, but even then it'll just be a caretaker. Mason might get more out of this lot or he might not. Probably not fair to inflict it on him.
He won't care and there won't be massive protests. The stadium will still be virtually sold out and he'll be fine with that.
Not even sure it’d really be knee-jerk now tbh, mate. We’ve been inconsistent-to-terrible for over a year now. Many bemoan that we go through managers like a knife through butter but we’ve sacked former managers for doing far better than this current dunce. I think almost any team in the league would’ve binned Ange by now.
I think that Nuno was sack cos of the crowd reaction to the 3 nil loss at home to United. He sacked JM to keep the fans from protesting over the ESL farce. And did the same with the Conte coach after the toon battering ... I think that a poisonous atmosphere on Sunday is very possible and there are thousands of unsold tickets in the top part of the ground for the quarter final of the EL. They've been on sale for two weeks and are priced as a category c game.
