To put it into perspective Drax power station is a large biomasspower station in Drax, North Yorkshire, England. It has a 2.6 GW capacity for biomass and had a 1.29 GW capacity for coal that was retired in 2021. It is situated on the River Ouse between Selby and Goole. Its generating capacity of 3,906 megawatts (MW), which includes the shut down coal units, is the highest of any power station in the United Kingdom, providing about 6% of the United Kingdom's electricity supply. Enough to power five million homes. And you want to use 1 megawatt to charge 1 car?

Tesla sales have plummeted to their lowest level in three years after a backlash against its boss Elon Musk.

The electric car maker delivered almost 337,000 electric vehicles in the first three months of 2025, a 13% drop from a year ago.

Tesla shares tumbled in early trading on Wednesday after the release of the unexpectedly low sales numbers.

    That’s not true…
The low sales were entirely expected!

13% lower than a year ago... Is that a huge drop in terms of car sales? I don't know.

GM reported a 17% year-over-year increase in sales, selling 693,363 vehicles in Q1 2025. Electric vehicle (EV) sales nearly doubled, surging 94% to 31,887 units, making GM the second-largest EV seller in the U.S. Strong performances from the Equinox and Blazer EVs contributed to the increase, along with double-digit growth across Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, and Buick.

In contrast, Ford reported a 1.3% decline in total U.S. sales for the quarter, delivering 501,291 vehicles. The drop was primarily due to reduced rental fleet sales and the discontinuation of the Edge SUV and Transit Connect van.

The Model Y was the world's best selling car for a while, marginally ahead of the Toyota Corolla.

2.6 (Biomass) + 1.29 (Coal) = 3.9 Gigawatts or 3,900 Megawatts to power 5 million homes or 3,900 cars at once

It's been a while, so I may be wrong, but isn't the watt the measurement of how fast the electricity is flowing/the output?

But the measurement for EVs is kWh.. my car's EPA is 16 kwh per 100km, so in theory 1 megawatt would charge my car for around 6500km travel... Which batteries are no where near this level of development, so really, what he said is pretty far in the future or most likely not going to happen.

The maths has been done in my head, so excuse the errors.

Definition of Watt - the SI unit of power, equivalent to one joule per second. The Chinese are saying you can charge a car battery as rapidly as filling up with petrol. Yes you can with enormous, totally unrealistic, dangerous and damaging (to the battery) power levels. It's BS. The same power can be used more efficiently at lower rates (charge for longer).

All the supermarkets and car parks seem to be redoing their spaces with reasonable gaps either side. It always made me scratch my head the massive Tesco near me probably had 10,000,000 car parking spaces but even in the busiest days imo doubt more than half were ever being used at once, yet all the spaces were packed in so tight you’d struggle to get out a mini in one of them. It’s been redone recently.

If over half the cars sold in the UK don't fit into standard car park spaces, then the standard's clearly wrong.

I think there is a regulated minimum number of spaces required when building things such as supermarkets, the current standard size parking space was dreamt up years ago when cars were in general much smaller. See mini for example.
