Many who contributed to winning two world wars were teetotal. :emoticon-0138-think

Two months ago, a study came out stating that genetics plays a greater part in longevity than lifestyle, now a new study states the opposite.

Just have to be sensible and do what is best for you and adjust habits accordingly. Clearly the overriding factor is wealth and access to health care, healthy living and education... Shame that society is removing this from an increasing percentage.

So were Hitler and Himmler. And vegetarians. Not a good endorsement of either.

Everyone with any knowledge knows he was a teetotaller. Which will preclude you.
Him and Himmler would have liked to ban alcohol and cigarettes if they could have.

Woody Allen got it right. In that film where he comes back in 500 years time and the doctor he meets tells him that smoking 40 a day is the most healthy thing you can do.

tbh I haven't smoked a cigarette in over 40 years, though the doctor has got it on record that I was a former smoker. After 40 years I don't think its a problem.

My mother told me, everything in moderation is the best way to go through life, having each 77 I can say it was good advice.

After emigrating to Canada in '72, a couple of years later I went for my first annual medical check up - a requirement from my employer from an insurance perspective.

My GP happened to be a Welshman.

One of the first questions he asked me was "How much alcohol do you consume per week ?"
I answered "Between 2-3 pints of beer a day and maybe 1-2 bottles of wine per week."

He looked at me quizzically, inviting a response.

I asked meekly: " Is that a problem doc?"

His response " Let me put it this way. In the United States you would be classified as a rampant alcoholic. In Canada you'd be deemed a medium to heavy drinker, and in England you'd be called a mildly social drinker."

"What do you suggest I should do doc?"

"**** off back to England" he retorted.

And from a Welsh rugby playing quack I ask you !!

I have an annual check up with him next week. He'll tell me exactly the same again as he always does.:emoticon-0100-smile

There is growing evidence to suggest that good mental health = good physical health.

This is a genuinely good book to read if you do want to use diet to help you with various health issues.
It does recommend a plant based diet, but it has useful info about what foods help what problems (and is in separate chapters for separate health issues so you only have to read the relevant bits) and has easy advice, such as eating 4 Brazil nuts once a month to help your cholesterol levels

Definitely ... but there are simple things we can do to increase our chances of being lucky.

Good book recommendation from DBT btw.

The two are intertwined... Those not in good physical health are more likely to suffer mentally and vice versa.

With governments allowing food companies/supermarkets to poison us with their ever decreasing quality of products, the battle is ongoing. Madness that chemical vapes and energy drinks etc. are marketed so freely despite the effects of long term usage not being determined. Just setting up long term problems down the line, which will largely affect poorer communities.

The development of understanding around the role of gut biomes in physical illness will be interesting, as the gut can be linked directly to somatic experiences.
