Using the old school method of grading A-F

what Grade would give SAFC, in an end of year report?

    Effort
    Style
    performances
    Behavioir

and what Improvements you recommend for the next season

( I know we're not at the end of the season just yet, but just for fun on this Monday Morning)

I'd recommend adding point tally or league position to that report.

Effort - 8. They've worked hard but had some flat days. Hard work is a given though.

Style - 6/7. I don't really understand our style. First six or seven games it was a 9 or a 10 even. Distant memory now though.

Performances - 6/7. Feel like we have flattered to deceive often and have been dragged out of sticky spots by individual quality at times. Haven't found us convincing a lot of the time.

League Position/points - 9. Brilliant season off the back of the nightmare last time out. If form has gone another way and we were reaching this stage of the season with this amount of points and just hitting form, things would feel very exciting.

Hit and miss season for me with plenty of reasons to look forward with excitement.

Effort: 9 - Can barely fault the lads for effort. Think they've worked their socks off this season both in terms of effort in matches and the effort spent to improve themselves.

Style: 5- I may get pelters for this but it's just a personal preference. I don't like our style of football. It's clearly effective though.

Performances: 7- Would've been a 10 if asked in January but I think the performance level has dropped a fair bit recently. Even in our bad games we are never out of the game which is a major positive, except for against Coventry.

For next season, no matter what league we are in we need more squad depth and to actually use it. I'd also like to see a lot more control in games through possession.

Important to judge things over the entire season and not just the last few months.

    Effort - A
    Style - B
    Performances - A-

We are ahead of where I expected us to be.

What would I like to see changed for next season? Some obvious ones, and the first 4 are all linked :

    • Flexibility within games to change style. This has happened occasionally when switching to 4-4-2. But we need more than 2 formations, especially when they're only subtly different when in possession
    • More trust in squad players
    • Better use of subs
    • Not using a central midfielder as the second striker out of possession - really needs to be a number 10. Of which I don't think Rigg or Browne or Mayenda are. Our formation lends itself really nicely to a "maverick" type player in that role - and I hope Le Fee is that guy
    • A more effective right winger

Think this is pretty much bang on. Style I’d have as a 6 personally because it’s not attractive at times but it works - or it was. Often see new managers employing different tactics that work at first but then teams start figuring you out and that’s where we need to adapt imo. Teams have realised it’s easier to just sit back than allow us to counter.

Effort is a straight A. Not once have I felt they have left anything out on the pitch.

Style. A tricky one this. I enjoyed the start of the season when we were agressive and on the front foot. But we do seem, in my opinion, to not really play to our strengths. I think we go long to often and we dont seem to want to be patient in possession. We have scored some great goals, but most have been individual goals, not so much team goals. I will give us a C. Passable but I prefer a different style to what we have mostly played.

Performances are a B. Despite my views on style our results are good. We are hard to beat, are always in the game and have shown the top sides what we are about. They carry out the coaches instructions really well.

Behaviour an A. We arent a dirty side, or a timewasting one. We dont seem to play act like some and generally are respectful to the officials.

I think next season I would be keen to increase our possession. I prefer sides who control the game that way. I think we have a core of players who would thrive in that sort of play. I would also like us to keep the ball better in the final 3rd, we can be a soft touch when we get to the edge of their box. If I was to sign one player it would be a 10, a real one. I mean a highly creative player who passes quickly, can beat a man and is always in space. Over to the scouts...

Agree with that. We are a work in progress. I hope RLB is given the 2 or 3 years needed to build a squad capable of playing the way he wants it for 90 mins, 46 games a season

I think I like the style to a certain extent so would give that a B
Effort would probably be a B+ or even an A as for a young team they have stepped up
Behavior has been very good from what I can see so it would be a solid B+
    Performances would be a B-
as you can tell I believe that we are capable of so much more but I still think we have a bit of a defensive attitude when we take the lead in games and often this season we have not woken up until we are a goal behind. this seems to have coincided with the arrival of the new Portuguese coach which may be a coincidence or it may be RLB being too careful but our concerted high press seemed to disappear around this time. again this could also have been down to injuries and a change in how we play which has been difficult to change back or to change the players mind set. for me we are at our most exciting when playing quick attacking football but we are also more vulnerable as well so it is a tough one to call, but in the playoffs we have nothing to lose so I expect us to be prepared and ready.
