Work is to start this month on a fully automated toll system at the Humber Bridge, officials have said. It will signal the end of toll booths after 44 years. Motorists will be required to pay via an app or the bridge's website, although there will be an option to use cash at designated payment points. Chief executive Andrew Arundel said: "By completely overhauling the payment process, crossing the bridge will be easier and payment will be much more convenient." Work is expected to begin on 17 March and it is hoped that the system will be operational by the autumn. Motorists are being warned to expect some disruption during 10 weeks of work to build a new gantry.
They did the same at the Tyne Tunnels 2-3 years ago, it’s so much more efficient and quick. Good news I’d say.
Was it the Tyne Tunnels where they had a large receptacle you could throw coins in. Right amount went in and you were free to go. No messing handing over money or trying to put in some small slot inna machine. Worked well.
Then they will receive a letter through the post requesting if they would be so kind as to pay an unpaid toll fee of £30. If you're not inclined to do so, they thoughtfully double it, before agreeing to settle for a nice round £100.
Yes. It generally worked well but didn't give change so you often overpaid by 35p as that was easier than pulling over to the side to use the change machine
In my case I was coming back from a City game last season, it was late when I went through the tunnel and I thought I'll sort it tomorrow (you have 24 hours to pay with the Tyne Tunnel), and of course, the next day I was busy and I forgot. Then there's nothing you can do except wait for the unpaid toll letter (whilst hoping that the cameras didn't snap your numberplate). Alternatively you can set up an account and/or pay in advance to ensure that doesn't happen.
Because I went through it to Scotland . When I got there I took my grandson out then went out for Italian so it wasn't in my mind til it was to late .
Had a girl pull up at the booth shaking and in tears , was so frightened of crossing the bridge !! Had to shut the lanes down ( oh the power!!) and she turned round and drove back to the roundabout and went round by Goole ! another guy looked like a traveller thought he was clever gave me the fee in tiny coins laughing , so I made him wait while I carefully counted it one by one . Serves him right he stopped laughing .
Due to family visits, football, old town piss ups etc etc I've crossed the bridge countless times and can honestly say I never once came across a booth operator who was nothing other than politeness itself, how anyone would want to get clever with people so polite is beyond me?
Last thought was I got called to do the graveyard shift through the night of course it was winter dark and wet and you only get the odd car or so in the early hours , it can be creepy , and I must admit someone could just pull up and do you in and no one’s around - seen too many horror films I think !
