You always need a proper pre- season putting the miles in, I don’t know how many games he played out in America but it’s not ideal. Overall for me he’s added height and a physical presence but it as caught up with him. At the same time he’s had some great moments.
Some of this squad to be fair to them have looked excellent this season and others have at least become (and are becoming) quality parts of what could be a strong side after a season of getting used to playing with each other. We're starting to see some 'gelling' happen now. If we theoretically retain most of this squad for next season, ie convert our loans into permanents, then we won't need much more business on top of that. Macca has proven his worth this season for me, though ideally we'd want a left back. Coyle looks to be getting back to better days more consistently. Pandur has been great and the pairing of Jones and Hughes will only improve. Alzate has a very good game more often than not, Matazo looked like he was too good for this league, Puerta has been great and Zambrano looked to have something special about him too. Palmer can unlock a defence and pops up with goal contributions. Belloumi and Millar both offered a lot and Kamara has really grown a lot in the second half of the season so far, with room to grow further. Gelhardt never stops working and has quality about him. Pedro is on another level but how much will age catch up to him next season? Joseph is developing and although he's largely been played out of position, he's got something about him I like. My question marks right now are over Slater and Crooks more than anyone. Amrabat I imagine will leave at the end of the season. Coyle and Burstow I have question marks over to a lesser extent. If we retain what we have, lose a couple that haven't kicked on this season and bring in quality full backs for either side and bring a quality striker into the mix then we could start next season fairly stable providing we stay up.
Coyle is a real weak link at the back. Regularly outmuscled, often falls over and goes missing in games when he’s the captain. He often resorts to sideways passes or slows our attacks down too.
I don't disagree with this but also couldn't be arsed to start an argument either I'd take a full back for each side but wouldn't look to sell Coyle by any stretch. We need more competition in those positions though.
I always keep an eye on Coyle falling over because of the amount of times this season that it's cost us a goal. And in fairness, it hasn't been all that often.
Yeah we definitely need new quality full backs at either side. Coyle was great last season but he has in fairness looked a more limited player giving 110% and playing above what he’s probably consistently capable of long term. He’s had a poor season this year both in offence and defence.
Some people love to get on Coyle’s back but a lot of our better moments start with him, eg the equaliser against WBA.
Yeah, Coyle (like some others) had a pretty poor run of form over a few months, Nov-Jan time, but started the season one of our best players and over the past couple has turned it round. He's an OK option at this level, esp for a team looking to come lower mid - mid table, 100% effort and dependable, for me he could be braver on the ball but there's no way I'd get rid of him
Coyle can whip in a decent ball on his right foot, which is what makes it so infuriating that it feels like 60% of the time he decides to cut inside and lofts one out the back of the area with his left
Against Oxford the East stand wasn't worthy of a '**** off'. Coyle played a ball backwards, when he could have passed it forwards and groans followed, he gestured with his hand for them to quieten down. The views expressed in my posts are not necessarily mine.
Yet before the past two games almost nothing progressed via him at all for a long time. People have been getting on his back this season because he's been pretty poor for a large chunk of it. He's not the only one either. The past two games he's upturned a lot though, and long may that continue.
There's such a perception issue with Coyle. When he floats a lovely ball in like that one for the goal on Saturday people don't notice it or recognise it like they would if it was someone better known for technical skill. His image is that of a no-nonsense defender and sometimes that seems incompatible with the quality he actually produces. Someone with enough time and inclination could make a highlight reel of him putting quality balls in and curling shots into the corners of the goal with his weaker foot and it'd look incredible, but we don't think of him as that sort of player for some reason. Ashbee had and still has a similar thing; scored a lot of brilliant goals over the years, more than some of the supposedly more gifted players of that era did, but he was still always seen as just a tough-tackling midfielder with no technical ability.
a) who said Ashbee was regarded as someone of no technical ability...? b) lets not put together a highlight reel of Coyles defensive failures this season. Whilst h might make the occasional good cross, first and foremost he's a defensive back. Two good games dont make up fo the 20 he want AWOL when we needed a captain and leader.. Like Coyle, but sometimes you have to move on. Great for the club and having him around a bit like Andy Dawson. All opinion of course. lets hope h has 8 more good games before season end.
