That's what I mean though, I think the two get confused sometimes.

I think us Brits are generally quite reserved, but we think everybody should behave like us, because we have a certain arrogance about being British, in that we think we set the standard and the rest of the world should follow our lead.

We think Yanks are arrogant, French are rude, Italians are loud, Spanish are filthy, Germans are abrupt etc, because we measure them against ourselves.

When in reality it's just cultural differences.

 

You mean like "let's invade Iraq", or "let's build a casino on the moon while filling the skies with space junk"? Or simply "let's have bacon, eggs and maple syrup on pancakes for breakfast"?

To each of which, the only reasonable response is a good old British, "Are you sure that's wise Mr Mainwaring?"

 

I do agree with you in the main.

But as much as I've been defending Americans, there are a significant bunch who voted for Trump precisely because of who he is and what he represents.

I’ve always found them pretty friendly tbf. And unfailingly polite - even when they’re pointing a gun at your head. This actually happened to a mate of mine in LA. He got jumped by cops who mistook him for for a mafia hitman, just as he was coming out of a 5 day coke and alcohol bender. The biggest cop was yelling “Sir, do not ****ing move, Sir! Put your hands on your head and get down on your ****ing knees, or I will blow your ****ing brains out, Sir!” Never stopped calling him Sir at any point.

 

It's all bollocks - for instance, we go to rural France quite regularly and, on balance, even those that don't speak English have been great and very patient with my rambling French ...

Every nation has its share of absolute twats ... but it's individuals not nationalities ...

I got on a carriage on the subway in New York once and there were these two guys sitting opposite each other getting louder and lounder. It got to the point where they were in each others faces and I'm thinking this is gonna kick off in a minute.

When I started listening to what they were saying, they were talking about politics and finance and how Brooklyn had transformed over the years. Then the train stopped at a station, one of the guys got up, shook the hand of the other and said 'Hey buddy, this is my stop. Good talking to you'. The other guy is like 'Hey man, you too, you take care now'

And that's all it was, just two New Yorkers chatting about their City. Just a normal everyday conversation on the Subway.

We just don't do that on the Underground, we stare at our phones, the adverts, the floor. Anything not to make eye contact or engage a stranger.

 

So the arrested captain of the Solong cargo ship that crashed into the Tanker carrying US aviation fuel, is RUSSIAN...

Honestly I think people are just people wherever you go. Cultures change but people don't.

There's the same blend of self-centered assholes and conscientious good-people. Once you get used to their way of expressing things in a new location you find, its the same mix.
