Well after the six pointer win against Morecambe it looked like we were safe. After another defeat yesterday and Morecambe winning and others picking up points at the bottom. It is not looking so safe again. Now Coleman has only won one game since becoming manager and his substitutions or lack of them has become a real concern. He is only contracted till end of season. Scott Lindsey was our first choice and has now become available. Do we go for him now or hope still available in summer or stick with Coleman.
Ah didn't see this post before I responded on the star player vs Newport thread but the answer is no, all change in the summer (providing we stay up).
I say no to your original question of should he be manager next season. And the backroom staff can leave with him as far as I'm concerned.
gioblues mentions the lack of substitutions... I would have posed the same question before Newport's 3rd goal. Coleman has been guilty of not using subs in games - where change was needed - or using subs when Gills were ' on top ' - often taking off the best Gills player.....all of which is baffling. .. If any manager can't see a disaster inside 30 minutes, and doesn't make changes when the side is 0-3 , then any manager can go !......... ...... and, with the exception of Gale, Gbode & McKenzie, everyone else can form an orderly queue behind ( or in front ), of Colemen.
If the guy we were after is now available, get him in now. he can start to process how many to get rid off and look for new signings to cover. A complete new team wont be easy to find, so give him time. As for Colemen, I have seen enough
I'd not taken much notice of going ons on twitter recently, for obvious reasons lol...so only just read the quote below...I'd sack him here and now just for that comment alone....now you see why I'm keeping off twitter at the moment. Benjamin Watts @BenWattsSport “I’ll get castigated tomorrow for not making subs. “I just didn’t think it was the time to put players on when the pitch was very firm. “I think it would’ve took anybody coming on ten minutes to get used to the pitch.” Boss John Coleman after #Gills defeat at Newport County. 10:53 PM · Mar 4, 2025 · 21.6K Views
So - what was Coleman's excuse for not making changes at half time - during which the subs could have used the time to get accustomed to the firm pitch !...... although, after his comment, I don't think I'll ever get accustomed to his firm head !......... The comment must rank as one of the most pathetic I have ever head from a manager - and, quite frankly, I'd rather have no manager than one that's going to be pathetic.
Like I say mate, if I was Brad I'd sack him just for the comment alone. Sorry but how much do we pay these players and coaching teams, he wants to chat about getting accustomed to the firm pitch. The problem is now, all he's gone and done is mount more pressure on the team, more reason for fans to turn hostile. Probably going to go down in history as our worst manager ever.
Personally I reckon he may go next week because I don't see someone who actually wants to be here. If the rumours are correct about the training then he's definitely not a committed manager. I personally hope we go and get Lindsey now because at least then we can start to build with a new identify. The only issue is him getting tarnished with a bad record to start with due to how poor this bunch are! But yeah it's definitely a no for me. He's made us a lot worse. He's on a level with Ady Pennock for me. The stubbornness to make no subs on Tuesday for me was the final straw. Yes I understand the mindset to say to the players to get us out of the mess however it's obvious the players were extremely lethargic by the end. Injecting some fresh legs could have made a difference (I doubt it, but it could have).
www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cr42y3wlrnko Now reported by the BBC too. I like Ainsworth but his recent record has been poor. Shrewsbury have failed to score in 5 of their last 6 he should feel right at home!
Coleman was appointed only until the end of the season with the caveat that the job could be his long term should he prove to be successful. The talk when he was brought in was to aim back towards playoffs, in that time we've dropped from 14th to 19th in the league, still have failed to score 2 league goals in a game and have only won twice. He has statistically the worse win ratio of any permanent Gillingham manager, even worse than Adrian Pennocks! That's clearly not met the targets of the club, so where does that leave us? We can continue this charade until the end of the season and effectively be in the same place as we were 12 months ago after letting Clemence go, or we could probably get a new guy in now to assess the squad for the next 2 months to work out who is worth keeping before then making signings in the summer. One thing Ainsworth is good at is uniting the fanbases of the teams he manages to aim towards one goal. Something we still haven't had for a significant amount of time barring about 4 weeks under Bonner. I'm actually excited about the prospect of Ainsworth coming in. The Shrewsbury situation doesn't worry me, they've flitted with being relegated for the past two seasons and I believe they just don't have the finances to compete to stay in League One. As for that there is rumblings that the takeover that has been going on over there has fallen through and Ainsworth was sold the premise of the job with a lot of investment which won't be materialising. The squad inherited was destined to get relegated long before he took over there. 5 Managers within 18 months is however a really bad look and I implore the Galinsons to give Ainsworth time. Lets not make any silly suggestions we'll go up next season, lets just back Gareth so that we can start to produce exciting attacking football that brings the feel good factor first.
Something had happened yesterday with players giving clues in there social media. I didn't think we would be getting another manager now though. Could it also mean Coleman is going to Tranmere. Like pegleg said makes some sense that Ainsworth comes in now to look at players he wants to keep and sign for next season
Yeah I'm happy with the new appointment. He also tends to have a good rapport with the media, which is generally helpful in todays game. Get him in, get him to look at the players and see how he wants to move forward with this bunch. Only one ask, look after and keep Glen Morris, I think his mentality and experience would be useful round the club. I think the youngsters Gbode and Gale are also worthy, but up to the new gaffer. This appointment has a Maddog feel about it. It's coming home...ok I'll shut up now.
Have read some suggestions that a decision on the management was actually made at the weekend. Either Coleman was offered the job permanently and decided to turn it down or the club hierarchy informed him that they were going to choose to go in a different direction and Coleman wanted it done asap. The deal for Ainsworth coming in then appears to have been in the works since Saturday evening.
Well from what I can tell from social media, Ainsworth was seen saying his goodbyes to club staff in the stadium's car park around 12ish. Having done the drive from Kent to Shrewsbury many times as my in-laws live there, its minimum 3 hour drive if its a clear run, more likely 4 hours with traffic so I suspect he would only be arriving at Priestfield around now. He'll probably be announced by the club this evening, but from what I gather and have read, it looks like the club weren't looking to announce it so soon and Sky appears to have got in before they should have done.
