This day in 1996 we lost 2-1 at Portsmouth in front of 9,000 supporters. Both Pompey goals came courtesy of one Deon Burton. Our reply was a Guy Butters own goal.

How attendances have changed. Then we would have had around 700, nowadays we take 2k. Portsmouth get 20k at home now.
I think this is the game where we were drinking in Portsmouth Harbour and two spanners were on their way to Bilbao.
They were alright but eventually his mate was dragging him out as they were going to miss the ferry, I was trying to continue the chat but sadly they left<laugh>

This day in 2000 we won 2-0 at Bolton in front of 13,000 supporters. Martin Pringle in the 80th and Andy Hunt in the 81st minute sealed the deal.

I loved that season. I missed maybe two games home and away. I always wore the yellow MESH strip for luck.

UEFA’s Annual club financial report out today makes sobering reading for most leagues in Europe.

    • The Premier League now has twice the annual revenue of its nearest competitor league, €7 billion per year compared to €3.5 billion for la liga and the Bundesliga.
    • The average club in the PL has annual revenue 60% greater than its German club counterpart, and three times that of its equivalent in Serie A.
    • Chelsea had the most expensively assembled squad in UEFA history - £1.66 billion spent. By comparison, the previous record holder Real Madrid had a squad worth £1.3 billion in 2020.
    • The Premier League currently has four clubs who have spent more than €1 billion on their squad - Arsenal, Man City & Man United + CFC.

This day in 1992, at Upton Park, we beat the Spanners 1-0, courtesy of an 84th minute strike from loanee John Hendry.

8,177 witnessed this most rare of occasions.

    Manchester United's new stadium <laugh>

    Manyoo.png

Supporters' group 'The 1958' have absolutely slated it <applause>

    A £2bn circus Big Top.
Singularly appropriate for the bunch of Clowns running the Club, and playing in their shirts.

I don't know how others feel but as a neutral I think there is now too much European Club football.

    Champion's League
    Europa League
    Europa Conference

In all of these formats now teams have to play an extra half season of games to get to the Final.
And to achieve this, FA Cup re-plays have been abolished - which only hurts smaller, poorer Clubs.
Midweek evenings on SSN are cluttered up now with too much obscure European stuff, getting in the way of domestic league coverage.

And thanks to FIFA we will have a Club World Cup tournament soon as well :emoticon-0113-sleep

The old European Cup, unlike The so-called Champions League, really was for Champions. The Cup-winners Cup was for the title of the best Cup team in Europe. Proper competitions. No talk then of elite clubs or elite players.

The Champions League is a glorified Uefa Cup.

There should be a legal challenge to UEFA's right to call it the Champions League.

Under some unlikely circumstance, apparently up to seven English Clubs could qualify for next year's CL - according to BBC Sport.
Makes a mockery of the name.

My 5 proposals to improve football-

    1. A maximum of 4 foreign players allowed to start for any team, and a maximum of 6 in any first team squad,
    2. All adult tickets in the Championship & below capped at £25 maximum,
    3. Scrap VAR,
    4. Re-introduce FA Cup replays,
    5. Ban, or at least stop 24/7 hyping, women’s football.
